BCCI Enforces New Practice Protocols for IPL 2026 Season
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a comprehensive set of guidelines for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, introducing significant changes to practice schedules and team operations. According to a note distributed to team managers, IPL franchises will be barred from holding practice sessions on match days, a move aimed at optimizing player rest and match preparation.
Revised Practice and Training Facilities
Under the new rules, teams will be allocated specific resources for their training sessions. Each side will receive two nets in the practice area and one side wicket on the main square, designated exclusively for range-hitting exercises. This allocation is designed to ensure fair access and prevent overcrowding during practice periods.
At venues like the Wankhede Stadium, if both teams schedule their training sessions simultaneously, each franchise will be entitled to use two wickets. However, the BCCI has implemented strict protocols to maintain order: no open nets will be permitted, and if one team concludes its practice early, the other team cannot utilize the vacated wickets. Additionally, fitness tests on the main square are prohibited on match days to preserve the pitch quality.
Travel and Attendance Guidelines
On practice days, players are required to travel to the stadium in the team bus, though teams have the flexibility to split into two batches for logistical convenience. A key stipulation is that players must travel separately from their family members. Family and friends are allowed to attend sessions but must arrive in separate vehicles and can watch from designated hospitality areas, ensuring minimal disruption to team activities.
Match-Day Conduct and Dress Code
The BCCI has also outlined specific match-day rules to enhance professionalism and broadcast standards. Players are instructed not to hit balls onto LED boards, despite the availability of hitting nets, to prevent damage and maintain safety. Furthermore, players and support staff are prohibited from sitting in front of LED boards; instead, designated seating areas for substitutes, equipped with towels and water bottles, will be clearly marked.
In terms of attire, players must wear orange and purple caps as per IPL branding requirements. If not worn throughout, these caps must be donned for at least the first two overs to allow broadcasters adequate capture time. The dress code extends to post-match presentations, where sleeveless jerseys and slippers are banned. Violations will result in a warning for the first offense, followed by financial penalties for subsequent breaches.
