IPL Embraces Dew Cure Technology to Revolutionize Night Cricket Matches

The perennial challenge of dew in night cricket games has long tilted the playing field, but the Indian Premier League (IPL) is taking decisive action this season. For the first time in tournament history, a specialized chemical solution called Dew Cure will be deployed across venues to combat excessive moisture and create truly equitable contests.

The Dew Dilemma in Indian Cricket

Evening humidity levels in India frequently soar between 70-90%, particularly when combined with temperature drops after sunset. This atmospheric condition leads to heavy condensation forming on outfield grass, creating slippery, wet playing conditions that significantly advantage teams batting second. The problem is especially pronounced in coastal cities and inland venues including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Jaipur.

The toss has become disproportionately important in these conditions, with captains who win the coin flip almost invariably choosing to bowl first to capitalize on the chasing advantage created by deteriorating field conditions. This has undermined the skill-based nature of the sport, making match outcomes increasingly predictable based on a simple coin toss.

Dew Cure: The Game-Changing Solution

The innovative solution being imported from the United States represents a significant technological advancement for cricket. Previously tested during the recent T20 World Cup at traditionally dew-heavy venues like Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium and Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, Dew Cure demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in neutralizing moisture buildup.

"The chemical is imported from the US and is used in Major League Baseball and golf courses. It will be a game-changer," explained an expert with hands-on experience with the product. "The liquid is diluted with water and sprayed on the outfield. Dew Cure forms a water-resistant barrier on grass blades, preventing dew and guttation buildup while allowing moisture to be absorbed into the soil, keeping the ball dry and conditions consistent across both innings."

Implementation Strategy and Historical Context

With the IPL season approaching, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to implement Dew Cure on a regular basis. The chemical will be sprayed on grounds both before match day and on the day of the game itself, creating a comprehensive moisture management system.

"It will be sprayed on the ground before match day and also on the match day, aiming to eliminate dew as a variable, reduce toss dependency and promote truly skill-based, equitable contests in T20 cricket," the expert elaborated.

This represents a substantial improvement over previous attempts to combat dew. In 2006 during the Champions Trophy and again in the 2023 World Cup final, a different chemical called APSA-80 was employed with limited success. "Previously, on certain occasions APSA-80 chemical was used but it did not give the desired results," the expert noted, highlighting why the switch to Dew Cure represents such a significant advancement.

The Broader Impact on Cricket

The introduction of Dew Cure technology promises to transform night cricket by:

  • Creating consistent playing conditions across both innings
  • Reducing the disproportionate advantage gained from winning the toss
  • Ensuring matches are decided by cricketing skills rather than atmospheric conditions
  • Providing a more balanced contest between bat and ball throughout the game
  • Enhancing the viewing experience for spectators with more competitive matches

As the IPL prepares to implement this groundbreaking technology, the cricketing world watches with anticipation. The successful integration of Dew Cure could establish a new standard for night matches worldwide, potentially influencing how other cricket leagues and international tournaments approach the persistent challenge of evening moisture.
