IPL Workload Management Under Scrutiny: Bumrah, Chakravarthy Cases Highlight Issues
IPL Workload Management Under Fire: Bumrah, Chakravarthy Cases

New Delhi: Sunday marked a pivotal day in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, determining the fourth and final playoff team while highlighting significant concerns over workload management. Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders were all in action on the double-header day, which was also the last day of the league stage. The day underscored how franchises have managed—or mismanaged—Indian cricketers.

Bumrah's Delayed Rest Raises Questions

Mumbai Indians finally decided to rest Jasprit Bumrah, but this decision came two weeks after the team was eliminated from playoff contention on May 10. The franchise could have allowed India's leading fast bowler a breather earlier. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene revealed that Bumrah had a niggle before the tournament, yet he was included in the playing XI from the start.

As Times of India first reported, Bumrah visited the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) for a knee niggle, not a back issue as previously speculated. Former BCCI Head of Sports Science Nitin Patel, currently with the MI franchise, accompanied him to Bengaluru. The 32-year-old joined the squad late and marked his run-up after training for a couple of days.

The question arises: if the MI camp was aware of the niggle and the CoE visit, why was Bumrah rushed into the XI? The franchise took a cautious approach with Rohit Sharma, who missed nearly a month due to a hamstring issue and played mostly as an Impact Player, yet kept India's most valuable player on the field for 13 games, most of which were dead rubbers.

BCCI's Stance on Micro-Management

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told TOI that the board cannot micro-manage player workload during the IPL. "BCCI can't micro-manage the workload and fitness of the players during the IPL, because otherwise, it will be interference in the functioning of the franchises by the BCCI regarding the activities of their teams and players," Saikia said.

Chakravarthy Played with Hairline Fracture

Not just Bumrah, but Varun Chakravarthy of Kolkata Knight Riders also played with a hairline fracture. KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane defended the decision, stating that the medical team gave the go-ahead. "Our team's physios and the physios of BCCI NCA and the Indian team had a discussion among them. I don't get involved in that at all. That's their department. My department is how's the player's mindset, does the player want to play or not, how big is the risk," Rahane said after KKR's last league match, which they lost to Delhi Capitals.

Other Injury Concerns

Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag revealed he was "definitely not fit" after the win over Mumbai Indians, yet he played that game and the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Parag is on BCCI's targeted players list and will be vice-captain of India A for the tri-series in Sri Lanka next month. Punjab Kings' Head of Sports Science Andrew Leipus disclosed that Arshdeep Singh operated with "restrictions" in his body.

It is understandable that no player wants to miss an IPL game, but the BCCI, IPL franchises, and key stakeholders need to align to ensure Indian cricket remains the top priority. With multiple players heading for different assignments shortly after the IPL ends, the last thing an Indian side needs is a burned-out cricketer carrying niggles.
