Irfan Pathan on Shubman Gill: 'Comparisons with Virat Kohli are Inevitable'
Irfan Pathan: Gill being compared to Kohli like Virat was to Sachin

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has drawn a fascinating parallel in the evolution of Indian cricket's batting stars, noting that Shubman Gill is now facing the same inevitable comparisons that once followed a young Virat Kohli.

From Sachin to Virat, Now Virat to Gill

Speaking on a recent broadcast, Pathan reflected on the cyclical nature of expectations in Indian cricket. He recalled how Virat Kohli was constantly measured against the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during his ascent. Pathan pointed out that a similar narrative is now unfolding, with the promising Shubman Gill being weighed against the monumental achievements of Kohli, who has amassed over 25,000 international runs.

"There will always be comparisons. Virat was compared with Sachin and now Gill is being compared to Virat," Pathan stated, acknowledging the weight of legacy that new talents must carry.

Pathan's Advice and Gill's Leadership Challenge

Pathan, who made his own national team debut at 19, shared a crucial piece of advice he received from the great Rahul Dravid. "The great Rahul Dravid told me that you have come to the team, it is good, but things would get tougher from here," he revealed. He believes Gill, who has recently been entrusted with leadership roles in Test and ODI cricket, is undergoing a similar phase of adjustment and growth.

"The same can be said for Gill. He became captain in that England series; he increased his average and authority within the team. Then he got the ODI captaincy. When that happens, you get an opportunity to grow a lot," Pathan explained. He expressed strong faith in the young batter's abilities, adding, "I think he is fully capable of it. He has a fine range of shots. The more responsibility and challenges he gets, he will grow as a cricketer."

The Recent Setback and Selector's View

Despite this strong endorsement, Gill's journey hit a recent bump. He was omitted from India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, a decision announced on January 2, 2026. This came after he served as vice-captain during the Asia Cup, following a successful tour of England.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the omission, stating, "We know what a quality player he is, but, perhaps short of a little bit of runs at the moment." Agarkar clarified that the decision was more about team combinations than a direct reflection on Gill's talent. "It's unfortunate to have missed out in the last World Cup as well because we went with different combinations... Someone has to miss out when you pick 15 and unfortunately, it's Gill at this point," he added.

Irfan Pathan, however, concluded on a positive note, emphasizing Gill's dedication: "I have seen that he is always ready for cricket." This insight from a former cricketer underscores the belief that while temporary setbacks are part of the sport, Gill's talent and work ethic position him for a significant future in the Indian team, ready to carve his own legacy amidst the towering shadows of the past.
