Sanath Jayasuriya Resigns as Sri Lanka Head Coach After T20 World Cup Disappointment
In a significant development for Sri Lankan cricket, head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has officially stepped down from his position. This decision comes immediately after the national team's narrow five-run defeat to Pakistan in their final Super Eights match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
A Campaign Ending in Disappointment
The announcement followed the conclusion of Sri Lanka's World Cup journey, where the co-hosts had already been eliminated from semifinal contention. Jayasuriya, the former attacking left-handed batsman, admitted he had hoped to conclude his coaching tenure on a triumphant note but fell short of that personal expectation.
"I thought from the World Cup, I would be able to leave here as the coach on a good note. I couldn't do that as much as I thought. I feel sorry about that," Jayasuriya stated in an emotional revelation quoted by the ICC website.
Decision Was Long in the Making
Jayasuriya clarified that this resignation was not a sudden reaction to the Pakistan loss but a decision he had been contemplating for some time. He revealed that he had indicated his intentions during the England series earlier this year, signaling he did not plan to continue in the role long-term.
"I thought I should give that title to someone else. That's why I mentioned two months ago during the England series that I have no plans staying here," the former Sri Lankan cricketing legend explained.
Contractual Formalities Remain
Despite his public announcement, Jayasuriya noted that formal discussions with Sri Lanka Cricket are yet to take place. His current contract is set to expire in June, and he acknowledged the need for official proceedings.
"I have not given my official decision or anything to Sri Lanka Cricket. I have to go and discuss with them. Have to talk about what do I have to do," he added, indicating the administrative steps that still need to be completed.
The Final Match Details
In the decisive match against Pakistan, Sri Lanka put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell short. Captain Dasun Shanaka and Pavan Rathnayake both scored half-centuries in their chase of a formidable target of 212 for 8.
Pakistan's innings was built on a dominant 176-run opening partnership between Sahibzada Farhan, who scored a brilliant century (100), and Fakhar Zaman, who contributed 84 runs. Despite their victory, Pakistan also failed to progress to the semifinals, missing out due to net run rate to the New Zealand national cricket team.
Looking Ahead for Sri Lankan Cricket
Jayasuriya's departure marks the end of an era for Sri Lankan cricket, with the search for a new head coach now beginning. The team's performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, while ending in disappointment, showcased moments of promise that the next coach will hope to build upon.
The cricketing world now watches with interest as Sri Lanka Cricket navigates this transition period, seeking to appoint a successor who can guide the team to future international success.
