Jammu & Kashmir Creates History, Wins Maiden Ranji Trophy Title in Hubli
In a momentous occasion for Indian domestic cricket, Jammu and Kashmir etched their name into the history books by clinching their first-ever Ranji Trophy title. The celebrations erupted at the KSCA Stadium in Hubli on Saturday as the final against eight-time champions Karnataka concluded in a draw. Cheers, hoots, and jubilation rang out across the ground, marking a historic victory for the Paras Dogra-led side.
Securing the Championship on First-Innings Lead
Jammu and Kashmir secured the championship based on their first-innings lead, becoming only the ninth team in Ranji Trophy history to win the title in their maiden final appearance. This achievement underscores their remarkable journey and dominance throughout the tournament. The team controlled the game from start to finish, showcasing exceptional skill and determination across five intense days of play.
Key Performances That Sealed the Victory
The victory was built on stellar individual performances. Shubham Pundir produced a vital century, while Auqib Nabi starred with the ball, claiming his seventh five-wicket haul of the season. Their combined efforts were instrumental in setting up the win. In their second innings, with a massive head start, J&K continued their dominance. Qamran Iqbal and Sahil Lotra scored centuries on the final day, cementing the team’s commanding position and guiding them to the historic triumph.
Karnataka's Struggle and J&K's Resilience
Chasing a mammoth 585 to take the first-innings lead, Karnataka’s openers started cautiously. However, Nabi struck just before lunch on Day Two, removing K.L. Rahul. Mayank Agarwal and captain Devdutt Padikkal stitched together a brief 29-run stand, but Padikkal was trapped leg before wicket by Sunil Kumar, leaving Karnataka two down for 56. Nabi returned to make a decisive impact, casting Karun Nair and dismissing R Smaran off consecutive deliveries, firmly placing J&K in control. Despite Mayank’s resilient 160 off 266 balls, Karnataka could not recover from the collapse and eventually conceded a 291-run first-innings lead.
J&K had faced an early setback in the first innings when Prasidh Krishna dismissed opener Qamran Iqbal. However, the J&K batters responded with authority. A 139-run second-wicket stand between Yawer Hassan and Pundir restored momentum. Two century partnerships and three half-century stands later, J&K posted a commanding 584, setting the tone for the remainder of the final and ultimately securing the title.
A Landmark Achievement in Domestic Cricket
This victory represents a landmark achievement for Jammu and Kashmir cricket, highlighting their growth and potential in the domestic arena. The team’s ability to dominate a seasoned side like Karnataka speaks volumes about their preparation and execution. As the celebrations continue, this win will inspire future generations of cricketers from the region and add a new chapter to the rich history of the Ranji Trophy.
