LSG Coach Justin Langer Compares Ekana Pitch to WACA, Admits Batting Struggles

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) head coach Justin Langer has openly acknowledged his team's difficulties in adapting to the unique playing conditions at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Following a failed chase of 160 runs against the Rajasthan Royals on April 22, Langer drew a striking comparison between the pitch and the famous WACA Ground in Perth, Australia, known for its pace and bounce.

Pitch Conditions and Batting Failures

Langer described the Ekana surface as "brilliant" but emphasized that LSG's batters have consistently failed to adjust to its extra pace and bounce. "I think the pitch here is very different than in most of India. It's a brilliant cricket pitch. You see pace and bounce and we just haven't quite adjusted to it," Langer stated after the match. He highlighted that while the bowling unit has performed well, the batting lineup has been repeatedly undone by short-pitched deliveries, a rarity on typical Indian pitches.

The venue has proven particularly troublesome for Lucknow, who have now lost all three of their home games this IPL season. Since 2024, LSG have managed just six wins in 17 matches at Ekana Stadium, underscoring a persistent home-ground disadvantage. In the recent chase, LSG collapsed early to 11/3 within three overs, with Rajasthan Royals bowlers Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger exploiting the conditions effectively. Key dismissals included Rishabh Pant edging behind and Aiden Markram falling to a sharp short ball, illustrating the team's discomfort against bounce.

Langer's Analysis and Future Prospects

Langer reiterated that unfamiliarity with such conditions is a core issue. "We see a lot of wickets in India where the ball doesn't bounce much. This is like playing at the WACA, there's real pace and bounce. We just haven't been able to adapt," he added. Despite these batting setbacks, Langer praised his bowling unit, singling out Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav as future prospects for the Indian national team. "I think Mohsin Khan, again outstanding. Prince Yadav, I think they're both two players who will play for India. No question in my mind they'll both play for India," he said confidently.

He also dismissed any concerns over pitch preparation, fully backing the ground staff and reaffirming that the surface is among the best in the country. "It's a great cricket wicket. Every game here is exciting, we've just been on the wrong side of it so far," Langer concluded, expressing optimism for improvement as the season progresses.
