Mohammad Kaif's IPL Advice: Why Ishan Kishan Should Return to Mumbai Indians
Kaif: Ishan Kishan Should Return to Mumbai Indians

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has sparked a major discussion in the cricketing world by suggesting that wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan should make a strategic return to the Mumbai Indians franchise. This advice comes in the wake of Kishan's stint with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2025 Indian Premier League season, where his batting position became a point of contention.

The Batting Position Conundrum

Kaif's central argument hinges on a critical difference in Ishan Kishan's performance based on his position in the batting order. The cricketer-turned-analyst highlighted a significant statistical disparity on his YouTube channel. In 55 innings as an opener, Kishan has amassed 1733 runs at a healthy average of 33.98. This contrasts sharply with his output when batting at number three, where he has managed to score only 532 runs at a considerably lower average of 26.60.

"Ishan Kishan is a better batter at Wankhede. He will open if he plays for MI. At SRH he is playing at three. There is a huge difference," Kaif stated, pinpointing the core issue. He further elaborated that despite SRH acquiring him for a hefty sum of Rs 11.25 crore, their top-order composition prevented them from offering him his preferred opening slot.

A Season of Contrasts for SRH

Ishan Kishan's journey with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025 was a tale of two halves. He started the season with a spectacular bang, slamming a quickfire century against the Rajasthan Royals. This explosive beginning created high expectations for the southpaw.

However, his form tapered off afterwards. The team's top order, which on paper looked brilliant with Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, faced its own woes, and Kishan, batting at number three, could not maintain his initial momentum. Interestingly, after being picked by SRH, Kishan had proactively called his teammate Abhishek Sharma to understand the team's demands. He was explicitly told that his job was to "hit each and every ball" and enjoy his batting, a role he embraced initially.

The Mumbai Indians Advantage

Kaif strongly believes that a move back to Mumbai Indians would be mutually beneficial. He argued that the franchise would not only get a proven performer at the top of the order but also a crucial Indian wicketkeeper. This, he noted, would free up a valuable overseas player slot for the team, allowing them greater flexibility in building their playing eleven.

"Maybe Ishan would be requesting himself to go to Mumbai if any deal is possible because he will get to open there. It is a very good option for Mumbai if they can get Ishan," Kaif added, suggesting that the player himself might be inclined towards a move that optimizes his strengths. The familiarity of the Wankhede Stadium and the assurance of an opening position are presented as key factors that could rejuvenate Kishan's IPL career.
