NEW DELHI: The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, failing to build on their 2024 title triumph. After ending a decade-long title drought, the franchise missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year under captain Ajinkya Rahane.
Disastrous Start
KKR had one of their worst starts in IPL history, remaining winless in their first six matches—five defeats and a no-result. They collected just one point from those games, effectively pushing them to the bottom of the table early on.
Strong Fightback Falls Short
Despite the terrible beginning, KKR mounted a strong comeback in the second half, winning six of their next seven matches. This revived their playoff hopes, making them one of the form teams heading into the final league fixture against Delhi Capitals. However, they needed a massive victory over Delhi and a Rajasthan Royals loss to Mumbai Indians. Neither happened. Rajasthan Royals won to secure their playoff spot, and KKR suffered a 40-run defeat in their final game.
KKR ended the season with six wins, seven defeats, and one no-result from 14 matches, finishing seventh with 13 points and a net run rate of -0.147.
Key Reasons for KKR's Struggles
Opening Combination Confusion
KKR had explosive openers Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, but they chose Allen and Rahane as openers, which failed to deliver consistent results. The uncertainty around the opening pair hurt the team badly.
Rahane's Strike Rate
Captain Ajinkya Rahane scored 335 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 135.08, failing to provide explosive starts during the powerplay.
Pathirana's Injury
KKR spent Rs 18 crore on Matheesha Pathirana, but he was plagued by injuries. He joined late due to a calf injury and made only a brief appearance before suffering a hamstring injury.
Mustafizur Rahman's Absence
The absence of Mustafizur Rahman, bought for Rs 9.2 crore, was a major setback. He was released due to geo-political developments, leaving a void in the bowling attack.
Varun Chakravarthy's Injury Concerns
Star spinner Varun Chakravarthy battled multiple injuries, often seen with knee braces. After a slow start, he took 10 wickets in four games but was not fully fit, affecting his performance.
Positives for KKR
Angkrish Raghuvanshi emerged as a bright spot, scoring 422 runs in 13 matches at an average of 42.20, often rescuing the team from top-order collapses. Young pacer Kartik Tyagi, bought for Rs 30 lakh, took 18 wickets, the third-highest among Indian bowlers in the league stage.
What Next for KKR?
KKR's poor start proved too damaging despite a strong fightback. With three IPL trophies, another playoff miss will force management to rethink several areas, including captaincy, ahead of IPL 2027.
