India put up a commanding performance on the opening day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan, powered by magnificent centuries from KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. The hosts ended the day at 345 for the loss of two wickets, asserting their dominance from the outset.
Rahul and Gill's Masterclass
KL Rahul, returning to the Test side, looked in sublime touch as he crafted a fluent 154 not out, his seventh Test century. His innings was a blend of elegant drives and solid defense, keeping the Afghan bowlers at bay. Shubman Gill, continuing his rich vein of form, notched up his fourth Test hundred, scoring 118 off 152 balls. The duo added 267 runs for the second wicket, setting a solid platform for India.
Afghanistan's Struggle
Afghanistan won the toss and opted to field, but their decision backfired as the Indian openers got off to a brisk start. Yashasvi Jaiswal (22) fell early, but Rahul and Gill took control. The Afghan bowlers, led by Rashid Khan, tried various tactics but failed to break the partnership. Rashid finished with 1/84, while the other bowlers were expensive.
India's Dominance
India's batting lineup showcased depth and aggression, with Rahul and Gill dominating the proceedings. The pitch at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium offered assistance to spinners, but the Indian batsmen adapted well. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 45, and the team will aim to post a massive total on Day 2.
This Test marks Afghanistan's first-ever Test match against India, and they will need early wickets on Day 2 to stay in the contest.
