Kolkata Franchise Honors Andre Russell with Jersey Number Retirement
The Kolkata franchise has made a historic and emotional decision to permanently retire jersey number 12 in honor of their long-time all-rounder Andre Russell. This rare tribute was officially announced during a preseason team event held in Kolkata on Tuesday evening, with Russell himself present in his new capacity as Power Coach on the support staff.
A Decade of Dominance and Dedication
Andre Russell's remarkable association with the Kolkata side spanned over a decade, from 2014 to 2025, during which he became one of the most influential players in the franchise's history. He played an instrumental role in their championship successes, contributing significantly to title-winning campaigns in both 2014 and 2024. Throughout his tenure, Russell established himself as a fearsome all-rounder known for his explosive batting and game-changing performances.
Statistical Brilliance and Record-Breaking Feats
Russell featured in an impressive 140 matches for the Kolkata franchise, amassing 2,651 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 174.17 while also claiming 123 crucial wickets. He remains among an elite group of all-rounders in the tournament's history to achieve the double milestone of crossing 2,000 runs and 100 wickets. His most outstanding individual season came in 2019 when he was deservedly named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring 510 runs at a strike rate exceeding 200.
The West Indian powerhouse also holds the best bowling figures for the Kolkata side in the league, having recorded an exceptional 5 for 15 against Mumbai in 2021. With 122 wickets to his name, Russell stands as the team's second-highest wicket-taker, trailing only behind the legendary Sunil Narine.
Emotional Tributes and Legacy Recognition
Announcing this significant decision, CEO Venky Mysore explained that the number 12 jersey had become completely synonymous with Russell's identity and contributions. "He always wore No. 12 with immense pride and distinction, and it became closely associated with his persona and performances," Mysore stated. "We felt it was a fitting and permanent tribute to retire the number in his honor, recognizing his extraordinary impact on our franchise."
An emotional Russell reflected on his incredible journey with the franchise, describing it as "over a decade of amazing achievements and unforgettable memories." He added, "To be part of two championship-winning teams and to witness what those victories meant to everyone associated with this franchise has been truly special. This organization made my entire journey memorable and rewarding."
Transition to Mentoring Role
A two-time ICC Men's T20 World Cup champion with victories in 2012 and 2016, Russell now transitions into a mentoring role as Power Coach, effectively closing a decorated chapter as an active player while continuing his valuable association with the side. This jersey retirement serves as a powerful testament to his lasting legacy and the indelible mark he has left on the Kolkata franchise's history and identity.
