Mango Farmers in Latehar Hit by Weather and Poor Market Returns
Mango Cultivators in Latehar Face Weather and Market Woes

Daltonganj: Mango cultivators under the government-run Birsa Harit Gram Yojana in Latehar district are confronting a dual challenge from erratic weather conditions and poor market returns. Unseasonal storms and strong winds have significantly impacted mango production across various blocks.

Weather Damage Devastates Crops

Kamlesh Oraon, a beneficiary from Jhano village under Manika block, reported severe losses. "Storm and gale devastated around 10 quintals of unripe mangoes as well as a few of my trees. The storm has ruined my earnings," he said. Oraon cultivates mangoes on two acres under the scheme, hosting approximately 200 trees. According to norms, one acre accommodates around 112 mango trees.

Similar concerns were raised by Surender, husband of Shalini Devi, a beneficiary from Marang Loiya village in Balumath block. "We cultivated mangoes on one acre. But bad weather uprooted three of my trees," he stated. Surender noted that his plantation is still in its early stage, and he has taken preventive steps for future yield. "My mango trees are just a year old. I hope for a better yield in 2027," he added.

Market Linkage and Pricing Issues

Cultivators also flagged problems with market linkages and pricing. "Plucking, packing, transporting, and selling mangoes is a day-long tiresome affair. But buyers often manipulate prices. We get very little money for all this effort," said Oraon. While good quality mangoes are priced at Rs 50–60 per kg in Latehar, beneficiaries often receive less, according to sources.

Official Intervention

Taking note of these concerns, Latehar Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC) Syed Reyaz Ahmad held a meeting with mango cultivators and prospective buyers on Tuesday. He directed officials to ensure fair pricing and improved market access for the farmers.

Expert Opinion

James Herunj, Jharkhand MGNREGA watch convener, commented, "Mango cultivation under the Birsa Harit Gram Yojana in Latehar is quite a common activity. The need is to have good and fair market value for it."
