Mayank Yadav's Fitness Awakening After Injury Ordeal

Young Indian fast bowler Mayank Yadav has candidly revealed a profound transformation in his approach to physical conditioning and recovery, following a challenging period marked by multiple injuries that tested his resilience. The 23-year-old Lucknow Super Giants speedster admitted to previously neglecting crucial aspects of his well-being before a surgical intervention compelled him to reevaluate his entire philosophy toward athletic maintenance.

From Neglect to Nurturing: A Complete Mindset Shift

Mayank's difficult journey began with an injury during IPL 2024, which was compounded by a serious back issue that sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. After completing an intensive rehabilitation program at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, the pacer is now preparing for his competitive comeback with renewed vigor and perspective.

"Everything has changed for me post-surgery," Mayank confessed during an appearance on JioStar's 'IPL Today Live'. "Earlier, I never used to take care of myself properly. Whenever recovery sessions were required, I would avoid them and neglect many essential aspects. But after undergoing surgery, I began paying meticulous attention to recovery protocols, nutrition, and sleep quality. The more I respect my body, the more my body respects me on the field."

Bumrah's Mentorship During Critical Rehabilitation Phase

During his time at the National Cricket Academy, Mayank found invaluable guidance from veteran Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who had experienced a similar surgical procedure. The young bowler described Bumrah as a mentor figure who provided crucial insights during the recovery process.

"When I was undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA, Bumrah bhaiya was also present. We share a very good bonding, and he has been like a teacher to me. He underwent the same surgery under similar circumstances," Mayank explained.

"Bumrah bhaiya generously shared his experience about how to successfully return after surgery and what specific aspects to focus on. He explained how the body responds during recovery—sometimes feeling good, sometimes not. Whether through phone calls or messages, he consistently shares his knowledge and experiences as much as possible."

Discovering His Pace Potential and Childhood Inspiration

Mayank, who recorded the fastest delivery by an Indian bowler during IPL 2024, also reflected on when he first recognized his exceptional pace abilities. "When I initially joined the IPL, our trainers measured bowling speeds with a speed gun. That's when I realized I possessed this special talent, this gift. Now I understand I must respect and nurture it properly," he stated.

The fast bowler acknowledged the significant physical and mental demands associated with his craft. "With fast bowling, circumstances can be unpredictable regarding performance capability. There's tremendous stress on the body, both physically and mentally."

Tracing his passion for pace bowling to childhood, Mayank revealed he was always drawn to fast bowling rather than spin. "When playing street cricket, I didn't know how to bowl spin, so I naturally gravitated toward fast bowling. My fascination with pace began in childhood, fueled by my father who showed me numerous fast bowling videos."

"I particularly enjoyed watching matches when India played in South Africa. Two pacers who truly inspired me were our current bowling coach Morne Morkel and the legendary Dale Steyn. Through observing them, I developed the passion and determination to bowl fast," Mayank concluded, highlighting the formative influences that shaped his cricketing journey.
