MCA Seeks Land for 1 Lakh Capacity Stadium Near Navi Mumbai Airport

Mumbai Cricket Association Initiates Land Acquisition for Massive New Stadium

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has officially commenced the process of securing land for the construction of a groundbreaking new cricket stadium in Navi Mumbai. This ambitious project is designed to feature a staggering capacity of 1,00,000 spectators, positioning it as one of the largest cricket venues in the world.

Strategic Location Near Navi Mumbai Airport

In a significant development, MCA president Ajinkya Naik recently held a crucial meeting with CIDCO Managing Director Vijay Singh to advance the land acquisition efforts. While initial plans had identified a site in Aamne near Thane, the association has now shifted its focus to a location in close proximity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

A source familiar with the discussions emphasized the strategic advantage of this location, stating, "A cricket stadium near the Navi Mumbai airport will be convenient for all, offering excellent accessibility for players, officials, and fans from across the country and internationally."

Addressing Infrastructure Gaps in Mumbai Cricket

This initiative comes as Mumbai currently relies primarily on the Wankhede Stadium for hosting international and domestic matches. However, with a capacity of just 33,108, Wankhede falls significantly short of meeting the overwhelming demand in a metropolis of Mumbai's size and cricketing passion.

Navi Mumbai already boasts the DY Patil Stadium, an international venue with approximately 46,000 seats that hosted the semifinal and final of the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup. However, this stadium is privately owned by former MCA president and educationist Vijay Patil, and is not under the direct control of the MCA.

A Landmark Project for Maharashtra's Sporting Future

MCA president Ajinkya Naik has hailed this project as a transformative step for cricket in the region. "This initiative marks a defining moment for Maharashtra's sporting ecosystem," Naik declared. "A 1 lakh-capacity stadium in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will not only elevate Mumbai cricket but also firmly position Maharashtra on the global sporting map."

He further elaborated on the broader benefits, noting, "This world-class infrastructure will create unparalleled opportunities for player development, provide critical exposure to emerging talent, and strengthen the cricketing ecosystem across all levels."

Global Context and Political Support

Currently, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad stands as the only cricket venue in India with a capacity of around one lakh spectators, and in fact, it can accommodate even more. The MCA's project aims to create a comparable landmark in Maharashtra.

To expedite the necessary clearances, Naik is scheduled to meet Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the near future. This political backing is crucial, as Fadnavis had previously assured the MCA of land for a new stadium during the inauguration of stands named after Ajit Wadekar, Rohit Sharma, and Sharad Pawar at Wankhede Stadium in May 2025.

Optimistic Outlook for Swift Progress

The Mumbai Cricket Association is optimistic about securing a suitable land parcel soon, following the productive discussions with CIDCO. This stadium project represents a monumental investment in cricket infrastructure, promising to:

  • Alleviate the capacity constraints of existing venues
  • Enhance Maharashtra's profile as a premier sports destination
  • Foster talent development through state-of-the-art facilities
  • Boost local economy through sports tourism and events

As the land acquisition process moves forward, cricket enthusiasts and stakeholders across Maharashtra await further developments on what could become one of the most iconic sporting venues in the country.
