Shillong: Meghalaya, which is set to host the National Games next year, is aiming to transform sports into a sustainable economic sector in the long run, drawing inspiration from the state's successful concert economy. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma shared this vision in an exclusive interview with TOI.
Vision for Sports Economy
“Our long term goal is to see that we are able to nurture our youths in a better manner, provide them opportunities in sports, and in a possibility also look at sports as an economy, look at sports as a source of livelihood and create value out of sporting in our state,” Sangma stated. He emphasized the government's intention to expand opportunities in football, where the state has already made a name, while also exploring other sports disciplines.
Infrastructure Development
To realize this long-term plan, the state government has been investing heavily in sports infrastructure. “The finishing touches to some of the stadiums are being done, which we expect by the end of this calendar year. We will be able to complete all our infrastructures required for the National Games as well,” the CM added. Nearly 240 sports infrastructure projects are either completed, under implementation, or under construction across the state.
Financial Allocation and Talent Scouting
The state has earmarked over Rs 72 crores for National Games preparations. Since June 2025, more than 50,000 athletes have been identified through talent scouting, and over 1,200 are currently undergoing structured training across various sports associations.
