The New York Mets are preparing to give outfield prospect Nick Morabito his first opportunity in the major leagues. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets plan to promote the 23-year-old ahead of their next game. He is expected to take the roster spot left open after veteran outfielder Austin Slater was designated for assignment.
Morabito's Performance in Triple-A
Morabito has spent the 2026 season with Triple-A Syracuse, where he showed steady production in his first run at that level. In 175 plate appearances, he hit .253 with a .364 on-base percentage and four home runs. He also added speed on the bases, stealing 14 bases in 16 attempts. While he is not known for power hitting, scouts have praised his speed and defense for years. His arrival now gives the Mets another young option in an outfield that has seen several changes over the last few weeks.
Young Outfield Depth Amid Juan Soto's Injuries
The Mets already had a crowded outfield before Morabito's promotion. Rookie right fielder Carson Benge has started finding his rhythm at the plate, while A.J. Ewing made a strong first impression after recently reaching the majors. At the same time, star slugger Juan Soto has been spending more innings as designated hitter because of forearm and ankle issues. That situation may open more playing time for Morabito, especially because he can cover all three outfield spots. His speed also gives New York another athletic player who can help late in games.
The roster move could also affect MJ Melendez. The former top prospect started the season on a hot streak, but his numbers have dropped sharply in May. After batting .345 during his first stretch of games, Melendez is now hitting just .133 this month and is currently stuck in a 1-for-20 slump. His strikeout numbers have also remained high.
Background on Morabito
Morabito was originally selected by the Mets with the No. 75 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. The organization added him to the 40-man roster last November to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. Because of that move, the Mets still control his contract for several more seasons.
For now, the team appears ready to see if the speedy young outfielder can bring fresh energy to the roster during a busy stretch of the season.
