MI Sign Maharaj as Santner's Replacement in IPL; All-Rounder Suffered Shoulder Injury
MI Sign Maharaj as Santner's Replacement in IPL

Mumbai Indians (MI) have roped in South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj as a replacement for New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner, who has been ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season due to a shoulder injury. The franchise confirmed the signing on Friday, with Maharaj joining the MI camp for his base price of INR 50 lakh.

Santner's Injury and Replacement

Mitchell Santner, who was bought by MI for INR 2 crore at the auction, sustained a shoulder injury during New Zealand's recent international series against Australia. The injury has sidelined him for the entire IPL season, forcing MI to seek a replacement. Maharaj, known for his accurate left-arm spin and handy lower-order batting, fits the bill as a like-for-like replacement.

Keshav Maharaj's Profile

The 34-year-old Maharaj has been a consistent performer for South Africa in international cricket, with 170 wickets in 55 Tests and 44 wickets in 42 ODIs. He also has experience in T20 leagues around the world, including the SA20 and the Caribbean Premier League. Maharaj's ability to contain runs and pick up wickets in the middle overs will be crucial for MI, who have struggled with spin bowling depth in recent seasons.

Impact on MI's Squad

With Maharaj's inclusion, MI's spin attack now features Piyush Chawla, Shreyas Gopal, and Kumar Kartikeya, besides Maharaj. The team also has the option to use the all-round skills of Hardik Pandya and Tim David. MI's bowling unit, led by Jasprit Bumrah, looks balanced with the addition of Maharaj.

Mumbai Indians will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign against the Chennai Super Kings on March 24 at the Wankhede Stadium. The franchise will hope that Maharaj can replicate his international form and contribute to their quest for a record-extending sixth IPL title.
