NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians' disastrous IPL 2026 campaign reached a new low during their clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Wednesday, when a series of fielding errors left skipper Hardik Pandya visibly frustrated. The moment that encapsulated their struggles came in the 10th over of KKR's chase.
Comedy of Errors in the Field
Pandya bowled a short delivery to Rovman Powell, who attempted a pull shot but only managed a leading edge that soared high into the air. What should have been a straightforward catch turned into a chaotic scene. Robin Minz and Deepak Chahar both positioned themselves under the ball but hesitated, each expecting the other to take responsibility.
Chahar, who appeared to be in the better position, seemed to lose focus after noticing Minz in his peripheral vision. Minz backed away at the last moment, and the ball landed safely between the two fielders, gifting Powell a lifeline. Pandya's reaction was immediate—he looked stunned and deeply disappointed as another costly mistake added to Mumbai Indians' difficult season.
Mumbai Indians' Batting Woes
Earlier, Mumbai Indians struggled to post a competitive total, managing only 147/8 in their 20 overs in a rain-interrupted contest. Asked to bat first, MI never found momentum and slumped to 41/4 inside the powerplay. Pandya scored 26, while Tilak Varma made a sluggish 20 as the pair attempted to rebuild with a 43-run stand. Late fireworks from Corbin Bosch, who remained unbeaten on 32 off 18 balls, helped MI reach close to the 150-run mark.
For KKR, Saurabh Dubey (2/34), Cameron Green (2/23), Kartik Tyagi (2/37), and Sunil Narine (1/13) impressed with the ball, ensuring MI never got away.
A Season to Forget
Already out of playoff contention, Mumbai Indians have endured a forgettable IPL 2026 season marked by injuries, inconsistent performances, and costly on-field errors. This latest fielding lapse only added to their misery, as KKR chased down the target with ease.
