Hailing from a middle-class background, Mithali described how both her parents were employed, but her mother had to resign from her job to care for Mithali and her brother. "I have seen my father struggle because apart from managing household expenses, he also had to ensure that I had good equipment to play cricket, which was expensive," she recalled. At that time, women's cricket did not offer financial returns, making it a tough pursuit for families without substantial means.
A Turning Point: Employment at 18
A major milestone came when Mithali secured a job with the railways at the age of 18. "It was a big moment. I could see how relieved my father was, and for me to be employed at 18 and share that burden of managing the household expenses, it made me very happy," she expressed. "While you're planning where you see yourselves three or five years from now, it's equally important to have a clear vision for your finances," she advised. "Having clear financial goals early on gives you direction, discipline, and security," she emphasized, adding that ambition in wealth-building is commendable and should be pursued with clarity and confidence.

Reflecting on her playing days, Mithali observed that many female cricketers came from modest backgrounds and faced difficulties. Today, with increased opportunities such as equal match fees and the success of the Women's Premier League (WPL), she stresses the need for financial education. "It is important that players are educated about how to manage their finances," she asserted. She pointed out that post-retirement avenues like becoming umpires, scorers, or video analysts offer additional income streams, making financial literacy crucial for long-term stability.
