As the Indian cricket team prepares to face South Africa in the limited-overs leg following a disappointing Test series defeat, bowling coach Morne Morkel has emphasized the need for the squad to regroup and move forward. Morkel acknowledged the challenging past two weeks but stressed the importance of channeling energy into the upcoming ODI and T20 matches. Speaking at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association Stadium in Ranchi on Friday, the South African coach stated, "We had a couple of days now to reflect on the disappointing performance, but now we must focus completely on white-ball cricket."
The bowling coach highlighted India's strong track record in limited-overs cricket over recent years, suggesting the team has the capability to quickly reverse their fortunes. However, he warned that South Africa enters the series with significant momentum following their Test victory, making them particularly dangerous opponents.
Key Players Return as World Cup Questions Loom
The limited-overs series will see the return of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, adding experience and firepower to the Indian lineup. Their inclusion has sparked discussions about their potential participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Morkel expressed confidence in both players, noting, "They are quality players who bring invaluable experience to the team. As long as they maintain fitness and motivation, their contribution remains crucial for major tournaments." The coach emphasized that while the World Cup is distant, the current focus remains on rebuilding team momentum through solid white-ball performances.
Regarding team selection and specific player roles, particularly concerning Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul's wicketkeeping duties, Morkel remained diplomatic, stating that selection matters fall outside his bowling department responsibilities.
The cooler weather conditions in Ranchi have drawn the coach's attention, with the day-night fixture presenting unique challenges. Morkel noted the pitch appears favorable, describing it as "almost South Africa-like," while acknowledging the opportunity for newer bowlers to step up in the absence of senior pacemen Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
