South African all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy has experienced one of cricket's most remarkable turnarounds, transforming from a dejected debutant in 2019 to a match-saving centurion in 2025 against the same opposition that once made him doubt his international future.
The 31-year-old cricketer of Indian origin delivered a stunning 109-run performance on November 23, 2025, at Guwahati's ACA Stadium, rescuing South Africa from a precarious position of 201 for five and giving his team a fighting chance in the second Test against India.
The Long Road Back From Wilderness
Muthusamy's journey to this triumphant moment has been anything but straightforward. His international career began disastrously during South Africa's 2019 tour of India, where he managed only two wickets across two Test matches in what he describes as a "forgettable debut series."
"There were times, especially after 2019, where I wasn't sure if I'd ever play Test cricket again and certainly not in India after we lost that series," Muthusamy confessed with refreshing honesty during the post-day press conference.
The all-rounder faced an agonizing four-year wait between his second and third Test appearances, spending those years grinding through domestic cricket while working extensively on his game. During this period, he collaborated with sports scientist Cheryl Calder, whose expertise played a crucial role in enhancing his performance capabilities.
Embracing Heritage While Forging His Own Path
Muthusamy's connection to India runs deeper than just cricket. His ancestors hail from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, though he has never visited his family's ancestral home himself.
"Of course, I'm of Indian heritage, but that was quite a few generations ago," he explained. "My roots are in the south, in Tamil Nadu. My mum and my aunt have been to visit our extended family on that end of India, I haven't been there as yet."
The cricketer identifies strongly as an all-rounder who aims to contribute meaningfully in every department. "I see myself as an all-rounder, so I try to contribute where I can towards the team's cause, whether it be bowling spin on the field or with the bat. I just try to add as much value as I can," Muthusamy stated.
Building Momentum Through Pakistan Performance
Muthusamy's current confidence stems from his recent outstanding performance in Pakistan, where he demonstrated his growing stature as a genuine all-round threat.
During that series, he claimed an impressive 11 wickets in the first Test and followed it up with an unbeaten 89 in the second Test, proving his capability to perform under pressure in subcontinental conditions.
Reflecting on his journey back to the national team, Muthusamy expressed gratitude: "I've gone back to domestic cricket and I've managed to work my way back into the national set-up. I'm just really grateful for the opportunity to be in India and to put in a performance like that in the first innings is an awesome experience."

Muthusamy was quick to acknowledge the contributions of his teammates, particularly praising Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen for their contrasting but equally effective batting performances.
"With Kyle this morning, it was against a new ball and obviously with a nine o'clock start, we expected it to be really tough and for them to really test us and they did," he analyzed. "So, I thought he batted really, really well. That was an awesome partnership to really set up the innings."
He reserved special praise for Jansen's explosive batting: "Marco was sublime when he came in. You guys know him really well from his T20 exploits, especially in India. He's got fantastic levers. He's a clean striker of the ball and he really, really showed his skills today. So, that was an awesome treat to watch from the other end."
