Nagpur Police Conduct Dual Sting Operations Against Illegal Cricket Betting
In a significant crackdown on illegal gambling activities, the Nagpur Rural and City Police have apprehended eight individuals in two separate operations conducted during the high-stakes India versus New Zealand T20 World Cup final match played on Sunday. The coordinated efforts targeted sophisticated betting rings operating within the city limits, resulting in multiple arrests and substantial seizures of equipment and cash.
First Raid Under Asola Bridge Nets Two Suspects
A specialized team from the Buti Bori police station, operating under the Nagpur Rural jurisdiction, executed a precision raid at a concealed location beneath a bridge in Asola, Dhawalpeth. The operation led to the apprehension of two primary suspects: Harshal Deole, a 27-year-old resident of Asola in Hingna taluka, and Adish Duff from Bori. Both individuals were allegedly engaged in accepting and facilitating online bets on the cricket match.
During the raid, authorities confiscated crucial evidence including one smartphone valued at approximately ₹10,000 and cash amounting to ₹10,800. The Buti Bori Police Station has officially registered a case against the accused under Section 49 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), supplemented by Section 12(A) of the stringent Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act.
Second Operation Uncovers Sophisticated Betting Setup in Residential Area
In a parallel operation conducted the same night, the Nagpur Crime Branch launched a targeted raid on a residential premises situated near Thackeray Layout in Gita Nagar, Faras Chowk, falling under the Mankapur police station limits. This meticulously planned sting resulted in the arrest of six individuals who were operating an elaborate and technologically advanced betting setup.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Chaitanya Kumar Thackeray (55) from Khapri Mohalla near Itwari Post Office, Purushottam Sonkusare (53) from Anmol Nagar, along with accomplices Sanju Ramtekekar, Hemraj Namdevrao Kohad from Shri Krishna Nagar in Nandanvan, Avinash Khadke from Lalganj, and one additional person whose identity is being verified.
Law enforcement officials seized a comprehensive array of equipment including one television set, ten mobile phones, and various electronic devices specifically used for betting operations. The total estimated value of the confiscated items amounts to approximately ₹1.38 lakh. The Mankapur police have formally registered a case under the provisions of the Public Gambling Act, with investigations ongoing to uncover potential connections to larger gambling networks.
