Nagpur Crime Branch Cracks Down on Illegal Betting During T20 World Cup
In a significant crackdown on illegal gambling activities, the Nagpur Crime Branch successfully dismantled a sophisticated betting racket that was operating during a high-profile international cricket match. The operation led to the arrest of two key bookies who were actively taking bets using laptops and mobile phones.
Raid Conducted During Sri Lanka vs Pakistan Match
The police action took place on Saturday evening around 9:30 PM, coinciding with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Acting on credible intelligence, officers raided an apartment located in the Om Nagar area on Koradi Road. This timely intervention disrupted the illegal betting operation during a major sporting event.
Arrests and Seizures Made
During the raid, police apprehended two individuals identified as Ashwin Meshram, aged 33, and Akash, also known as Battery Kaushal, aged 52. Both suspects are residents of Tirupati Nagar in Nagpur. The authorities confiscated substantial evidence from the scene, including one laptop, eight mobile phones, various other electronic devices, and a two-wheeler. The total estimated value of the seized items amounts to approximately ₹3.34 lakh.
Interrogation Reveals Wider Network
Following their arrest, interrogation of the suspects uncovered that two accomplices—Firozebhai Shah and Pareshbhai Sadhwani—were allegedly facilitating the betting operations. This revelation suggests the existence of a more extensive network involved in organizing and managing the illegal gambling activities.
Legal Action Under Maharashtra Gambling Act
A formal case has been registered at the Koradi Police Station under Sections 4 and 5 of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act. These sections specifically address gambling in public places and the keeping of common gaming houses, indicating the serious nature of the offenses committed by the arrested individuals.
Broader Implications for Sports Betting
This bust highlights ongoing concerns about illegal betting activities surrounding major international cricket tournaments. The use of technology—laptops and multiple mobile phones—demonstrates how modern bookies have adapted their operations to evade detection. The Nagpur Crime Branch's successful operation serves as a warning to others involved in similar illegal gambling enterprises during high-stakes sporting events.
