Nepal captain Rohit Paudel in controversial LBW dismissal vs USA

Nepal men's cricket team captain Rohit Paudel found himself at the center of a controversial dismissal during Nepal's ICC Cricket World Cup League Two match against the United States at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground on Friday. The incident occurred on the final ball of the 38th over when Paudel was adjudged leg before wicket (LBW) off the bowling of Milind Kumar, despite television replays suggesting the ball had made contact with his gloves while attempting a sweep shot.

Controversial Decision Sparks Anger

Paudel, who was batting on 46 at the time, had helped Nepal reach a strong position of 194 for 2, with the team looking set for a substantial total. After the ball rolled toward the wicketkeeper following what appeared to be a glove edge, the United States players appealed, and the umpire raised his finger almost immediately. Replays clearly showed the ball striking the glove rather than the pads, leading to Paudel's visible frustration.

Upon receiving the decision, Paudel reacted angrily, gesturing toward the umpire to indicate that the ball had touched either his bat or glove. As he walked back to the pavilion, he swung his bat in frustration and later punched it as well. Such displays of frustration, including swearing, throwing equipment, or hitting objects, typically result in Level 1 or Level 2 Code of Conduct charges. It remains unclear whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the Nepal captain.

Nepal's Dominant Performance

Despite the controversy, Nepal recovered well from the setback to post a formidable total of 317 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. In response, the United States were bowled out for 195, handing Nepal a comprehensive 122-run victory. The win highlighted Nepal's growing strength in the ODI format and their ability to overcome on-field distractions.

Paudel's Leadership and Aspirations

Rohit Paudel, who continues to lead Nepal across formats, also captained the side during the 2026 T20 World Cup. In that tournament, Nepal came close to defeating England, ultimately losing by just four runs at Wankhede Stadium. Speaking during the T20 World Cup, Paudel emphasized the need for more regular fixtures against Test-playing nations.

"If we get an opportunity of playing with them regularly, maybe in a year, I would say not even six or seven series but at least one or two series, so that we can test ourselves, that would be very good. I hope that after this World Cup, it changes," Paudel had said. He also stressed the importance of hosting major teams like Australia, England, or India in Nepal. "It will mean a lot, especially if an Australian team or an England team comes to Nepal," he added.

Looking Ahead

As Nepal continues to make strides in international cricket, the team's performance against the United States serves as a testament to their potential. With Paudel at the helm, Nepal aims to secure more opportunities against top-tier nations and further develop their cricketing infrastructure. The controversial dismissal, while a momentary setback, did not derail Nepal's victory, and the focus now shifts to future challenges in the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two.
