NorthEast United FC registered a dominant 4-1 victory over Chennaiyin FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday, propelling them four places up to ninth on the Indian Super League (ISL) table. This win marked back-to-back home triumphs for the Highlanders, following their hard-fought 3-2 win against Inter Kashi on May 2.
First-Half Dominance by NEUFC
Spanish winger Jairo Samperio gave the hosts an early lead in the fifth minute, slotting home a left-footed shot after receiving a delivery from the lively Jithin MS down the left flank. The Highlanders maintained their pressure, and Jairo doubled his tally just before half-time. A defensive lapse by Chennaiyin left-back Mandar Rao Desai, who misplaced a back pass outside the penalty area, allowed Jairo to pounce and finish clinically with his right foot from inside the box. His effort beat a fully stretched goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz and crashed in off the left upright, giving NEUFC a comfortable 2-0 advantage at the break.
Second-Half Drama and Own Goal
The margin widened in the 66th minute when Chennaiyin defender Laldinliana Renthlei inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a cross. However, Renthlei made quick amends just minutes later, scoring a fine strike to reduce the deficit to 3-1. Despite Chennaiyin's efforts, the result was already beyond their reach.
Late Sealer by Lalbiakdika Vanlalvunga
In the dying minutes of the match, former Aizawl FC striker Lalbiakdika Vanlalvunga put the final nail in the coffin. He fired a left-footed effort from inside the box, which goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz spilled, allowing the ball to cross the goal line and make it 4-1.
Match Statistics and Standings
Despite enjoying less possession than their opponents, NorthEast United made purposeful forays into the Chennaiyin box from the outset. Their intent paid off with an early goal and continued pressure. With this victory, NEUFC now sits ninth in the ISL table with 13 points from 12 matches, with two games remaining. Chennaiyin, who are just above relegation-threatened Mohammedan Sporting Club (three points from 11 matches), have nine points from 12 outings and two fixtures left to play.
