The Green Bay Packers kicked off their offseason workouts with conversations about building the roster and preparing for the 2026 season. Instead, the focus has turned to star running back Josh Jacobs following legal developments that put into question one of the team’s most important players.
Jacobs was arrested earlier this week in Wisconsin but the story is far from over. It’s a brief sigh of relief for both the player and the organization in the latest update, but also leaves a number of important questions unanswered as the NFL offseason continues to develop.
Josh Jacobs charges remain under review as investigation continues
The legal process surrounding Josh Jacobs is still unfolding. According to the Brown County District Attorney's Office, prosecutors are not yet prepared to decide whether formal criminal charges will be filed. Authorities believe additional evidence may still need to be reviewed before any final determination is made.
District Attorney David L. Lasee explained the current status in a statement:
"After reviewing the available evidence in this case, the Brown County District Attorney's Office is not yet prepared to make a formal charging decision. Our office has requested additional investigation, as there is reason to believe that additional evidence may exist that would impact whether criminal charges are appropriate, and what charges would be issued. Mr. Jacobs will be released from custody at this time, and a final charging decision will be made by our office at a later date."
Jacobs had been arrested on multiple allegations connected to a reported domestic incident over Memorial Day weekend. Following his release, the investigation remains active, meaning the case could still develop significantly in the coming weeks.
Green Bay Packers and Josh Jacobs remain in holding pattern
For now, both Jacobs and the Packers are taking a cautious approach. The running back has strongly denied wrongdoing through his legal representatives, who expressed confidence that the evidence will ultimately support his position.
"We are extremely pleased that Josh has been released from custody and that no criminal charges have been filed against him. As we previously stated, we encourage everyone to keep an open mind while the matter is fully reviewed. We remain confident that, once all of the evidence is gathered and evaluated, it will confirm that no charges should be brought against Josh in the future."
The Packers have also avoided extensive public comment. Head coach Matt LaFleur addressed questions during organized team activities but made it clear the organization intends to let the legal process play out before drawing conclusions.
The uncertainty creates a challenging situation for Green Bay. Jacobs is a central piece of the offense, and any future legal or NFL disciplinary action could impact the team's plans heading into training camp. Until prosecutors reach a final decision, the Packers, the league, and Jacobs himself remain in wait-and-see mode.
