Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has unequivocally stated that the upcoming IPL 2026 season could serve as a defining chapter in the career of young fast bowler Mayank Yadav. Pathan has urged the emerging pacer to justify the substantial faith and investment placed in him by the Lucknow Super Giants franchise.

Mayank Yadav burst onto the Indian Premier League scene during the 2024 edition with remarkable raw pace, consistently exceeding speeds of 150 kilometers per hour. His explosive performances immediately captured attention, but subsequent injuries have significantly hampered his progress over the past two seasons.
Despite making only limited appearances, Lucknow Super Giants demonstrated exceptional confidence in his potential by retaining him for a substantial ₹11 crore ahead of the 2025 mega auction. This retention signaled strong organizational backing, though Yadav featured in merely two matches during that subsequent season.

The young speedster has recently returned to competitive action with two outings for India A during the T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up matches. Currently fully fit and working diligently under the guidance of bowling coach Bharat Arun ahead of the new IPL season, Yadav appears poised for a comeback.
Irfan Pathan, speaking on his YouTube channel, emphasized that the franchise's patience now requires tangible returns. "Mayank Yadav has played only six matches across two years, which simply isn't sufficient. He is a retained player who must be available and impactful this season. If there's no place for him in the playing eleven, that's a separate consideration. The franchise has supported him tremendously," Pathan stated.
He further highlighted LSG's unique approach to player development, noting: "Mohsin Khan missed the entire last season, and even in previous years, he hasn't featured in all games. Yet both have received backing that few other franchises provide. I've observed KKR and MI demonstrate similar patience, but many organizations lose faith after just one or two challenging seasons."
LSG's Bowling Arsenal and Mohammed Shami's Role
On the bowling front, Pathan believes Lucknow Super Giants possess considerable depth despite releasing Akash Deep. He underscored the crucial importance of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, who is expected to spearhead the attack.
"Their fast bowling department appears quite formidable with multiple options available. Shami brings extensive domestic cricket experience, excellent rhythm, and invaluable expertise. Everyone recognizes that under seaming conditions, Shami guarantees a reliable bank of two overs. Last season, he had to contend with flat wickets in Hyderabad. I anticipate he'll receive significantly more assistance from the Lucknow pitch," Pathan elaborated.

"This is essentially a team still discovering its identity. When you consider Mumbai Indians, you immediately associate them with legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah. Similarly, Chennai evokes MS Dhoni, while RCB connects with Virat Kohli. In comparison, Lucknow remains a relatively young franchise. It initially appeared Gautam Gambhir's imprint would define this team long-term, but Gambhir has since departed LSG, moved to KKR, and now contributes to the Indian national team setup. This squad undoubtedly possesses substantial potential," Pathan explained.
The franchise, which reached playoff stages during its first two seasons under KL Rahul's leadership before exiting in the Eliminator round, has encountered recent struggles.
