Irfan Pathan Touts Mumbai Indians as Greatest IPL Franchise Over CSK
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has weighed in on the heated debate over the greatest franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), asserting that Mumbai Indians (MI) hold a distinct edge over Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Pathan emphasized that MI's unparalleled contribution to Indian cricket, particularly through nurturing young talent, sets them apart in this perennial discussion.
The Stakes in the IPL Franchise Rivalry
Both MI and CSK have cemented their legacies with five IPL titles each, led by tactical masterminds Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, respectively. The rivalry is fierce, with minimal separation in terms of championship wins. However, Pathan highlighted that MI's scouting system and overall organizational setup have not only benefited the franchise but also significantly bolstered the Indian national team.
Pathan pointed out that MI has been instrumental in discovering and backing exceptional players like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma. These talents have gone on to represent Team India, contributing to recent successes in ICC tournaments and enriching India's trophy cabinet.
Pathan's Insights on the Debate
Speaking on JioHotstar's 'TATA IPL: Out or Out of the Park', Pathan elaborated on the nuances of the debate. "On picking the side between CSK and MI as the greatest team in the IPL, this will always be debatable," he stated. He acknowledged CSK's early dominance, noting their back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011, a first in IPL history.
However, Pathan underscored MI's consistent performance, winning titles in alternate years starting from 2013 and achieving back-to-back victories in 2019 and 2020. "But what I like about MI is their contribution to Indian cricket. The number of match winners they have produced for the Indian team is absolutely tremendous," he added.
Why MI Takes the Edge
Pathan explained that MI's ability to produce match-winners stems from their dual focus on building a strong franchise and delivering results with their squad. He noted that MI currently boasts four Indian captains within their setup, a feat unmatched by CSK, which enhances their team assembly and contribution to broader cricketing goals.
"Even now, MI had a great squad last season that could have easily won the trophy, but they could not for different reasons. CSK do not have four Indian captains, MI do. In that respect, assembling a team and contributing to a bigger cause, I think MI are the greatest IPL team," Pathan asserted.
He concluded by recognizing CSK's claims to greatness, given their five trophies, but firmly placed MI ahead due to their profound impact on Indian cricket. "I know CSK will always say they are also the greatest, having won five trophies too. There is no doubt. There will always be a debate and it is a fair debate. But I think MI take the edge because they have given so many wonderful cricketers and young talents to Indian cricket," Pathan summarized.
