Matheesha Pathirana Ruled Out of IPL 2026 Opening Phase, KKR Coach Reveals
In a significant development for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Abhishek Nayar has confirmed that fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana will be unavailable for the initial stages of IPL 2026. Speaking at a pre-season press conference held on Friday, Nayar disclosed that the Sri Lankan pacer is likely to return to action only by mid-April, dealing a blow to KKR's early campaign plans.
Injury Rehabilitation Under Sri Lanka Cricket Supervision
Pathirana, who was previously ruled out of the 2026 T20 World Cup due to a calf strain, is currently undergoing a structured rehabilitation program supervised by Sri Lanka Cricket. The young speedster managed to feature in just three matches during the tournament before sustaining the injury that forced him off the field during a game against Australia. His recovery timeline has now extended into the IPL season, with KKR awaiting further fitness updates from the Sri Lankan board.
Providing detailed insights into Pathirana's condition, Nayar stated, "The latest update that we know is he's obviously with the Sri Lankan cricket board and they are overseeing his rehab. The most recent communication we've received indicates that they anticipate he will be match fit around mid-April. That is the current information available to us."
Sri Lanka Cricket Issues NOC Updates for IPL Participants
In related news, Sri Lanka Cricket has released an official statement regarding No Objection Certificates for its players participating in IPL 2026. The board confirmed that Dushmantha Chameera, Pathum Nissanka, and Kamindu Mendis have successfully completed their physical performance tests and have been granted NOCs to join the tournament.
However, the eligibility of Nuwan Thushara for an NOC remains pending, subject to the outcome of his Physical Performance Test. Additionally, Wanindu Hasaranga, Eshan Malinga, and Matheesha Pathirana, who have all requested NOCs, are yet to undergo these tests as they continue rehabilitation from injuries. SLC emphasized that these players will undergo the required assessments upon completion of their recovery programs.
KKR Faces Bowling Setbacks and Explores Replacement Options
Nayar acknowledged the absence of key bowlers as a major challenge for KKR, particularly highlighting the loss of Harshit Rana. "Firstly, it is a big blow, because Harshit has been an integral part of this team for the last couple of seasons, including our championship-winning campaign. He has shown tremendous growth as a cricketer over the years, making him difficult to replace," the coach remarked.
He further revealed that the team management is actively scouting for alternatives, stating, "Over the last few days, we have been evaluating several bowlers with the assistance of our leadership group. We are assessing who can best fit into the role and perform effectively. While we have not finalized a decision yet, we hope to identify a suitable candidate soon who can contribute positively to the squad."
Dwayne Bravo Expresses Confidence in Squad Depth
KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo remained optimistic despite the setbacks, emphasizing the depth of talent available in Indian cricket. "In any tournament or team, losing key bowling options is something you plan for and must accept. The positive aspect of Indian cricket currently is the abundance of depth," Bravo noted.
He pointed to potential replacements such as Umran Malik, highlighting their experience and potential. "We are considering players like Umran Malik, who have represented the national team and have IPL experience. These young, exciting talents bring energy to the squad, and I am personally eager to work with this group of fast bowlers," Bravo added, underscoring his confidence in the team's ability to adapt.
As IPL 2026 approaches, KKR will need to navigate these early challenges while banking on their strategic planning and the resilience of their squad to maintain competitiveness in the tournament.
