Florentino Perez will remain president of Real Madrid until 2030 after defeating challenger Enrique Riquelme in the club's presidential election, extending one of the most influential reigns in world football and setting the stage for what could be a transformative summer at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The result secures another term for the 79-year-old businessman, who first took charge of Real Madrid in 2000 and has overseen some of the most successful periods in the club's history. Yet unlike several recent election cycles, this victory came after a genuine contest, with Riquelme mounting the first significant challenge Perez has faced in years.
The election also arrives at a pivotal moment for the Spanish giants following a disappointing season and amid growing discussion about managerial changes, transfer plans and the club's long-term sporting direction.
Perez wins first meaningful electoral challenge in years
According to reports from Spain, Perez comfortably defeated Riquelme after voting concluded at Valdebebas on Sunday. The result extends his mandate through 2030 and marks another chapter in a presidency that has shaped modern Real Madrid.
After losing his first presidential bid to Ramon Mendoza in 1995, Perez famously defeated Lorenzo Sanz in 2000 before winning re-election four years later with more than 90 per cent of the vote. Since returning to power in 2009 following Ramon Calderon's departure, Perez had largely governed without opposition. He ran unopposed in 2009, 2013, 2017, 2021 and 2025 after no rival candidate successfully met the requirements needed to challenge him.
This year's election was different. Despite technically being under mandate until 2029, Perez unexpectedly called fresh elections last month following a season that generated criticism both on and off the pitch. What began as a relatively measured campaign gradually became more confrontational as election day approached, with both camps presenting competing visions for Real Madrid's future.
Although Riquelme ultimately fell short, his campaign established him as a notable figure within the club's political landscape and potentially a future presidential candidate once Perez's latest term comes to an end.
Transfer plans and managerial changes dominated the campaign
Much of the election discussion centred around sporting matters rather than club politics. Riquelme publicly claimed he would pursue Jurgen Klopp as Real Madrid's next manager and attempt to sign Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. Both Klopp and Haaland denied any contact, while reports suggested Manchester City were considering legal action over references made to their player during the campaign.
Perez, meanwhile, outlined his own vision for the next phase of the club. According to CBS Sports, one of the first major decisions expected following the election is the appointment of Jose Mourinho, with the former Real Madrid manager widely reported to be preparing for a return to the Bernabeu. Mourinho was also actively involved in supporting Perez's campaign during the election period.
Transfer activity formed another major talking point. Perez indicated that former Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate and Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries are among the players expected to strengthen the squad, while also hinting at an even bigger move still to come. In recent comments, Perez suggested Real Madrid would enter the market to sign a "world-class player" and indicated the club could make an offer worth approximately 150 million euros. Multiple reports have linked Bayern Munich and France star Michael Olise with that potential move, although no official confirmation has been provided.
Perez promises unity and ambition
Following his victory, Perez delivered a speech focused on continuity, independence and ambition. "As the president of Real Madrid, I am very proud of all of you. It has been a brilliant electoral day, where the members have freely expressed themselves to decide the destiny of the greatest club in history. This is the Real Madrid we all want. An independent Real Madrid. A Real Madrid unafraid of challenges and obstacles."
The veteran president also referenced both the Santiago Bernabeu and the club's sporting ambitions, while using his victory speech to confirm Jose Mourinho's return to the club as head coach. "We will continue to take pride in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the best stadium in the world. Proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a madridista like Jose Mourinho."
Perez also reiterated one of the central themes of his presidency: maintaining Real Madrid's ownership structure. "With me as president, Real Madrid has been, is, and will always remain owned by its members." He later extended an olive branch to supporters who backed his rival candidate. "We must stay united, driven by our passion for Real Madrid. To those who did not vote for me, I will do everything possible to address your concerns."
A familiar figure prepares for another chapter
Perez's re-election means Real Madrid will continue under the leadership of the man who oversaw both the Galacticos era and the club's modern Champions League dominance. Now, with a fresh mandate secured until 2030, attention immediately shifts from the ballot box to the football pitch. The coming weeks are expected to bring decisions on the managerial position, significant transfer activity and the next phase of Real Madrid's sporting project.
For Perez, the election victory was the easy part. Delivering on the ambitious promises that helped secure another term may prove the bigger challenge.
