Chennai's suburban railway network between Arakkonam and Chengalpet is set to receive an additional line, as Indian Railways has approved a substantial doubling project worth Rs 993 crore. The 68-kilometer project, executed under Southern Railway, is a key component of the Chennai suburban circular rail network, which connects Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpet, and Arakkonam.
Project details and benefits
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the project would significantly ease congestion on this busy railway corridor, while improving punctuality and operational efficiency. He further emphasized that the initiative would strengthen freight movement across the corridor, facilitating the transport of essential commodities such as cement, automobiles, food grains, iron, and steel.
Current capacity and future demand
According to railway officials, the existing single-line section is already operating at high capacity utilization, and traffic is projected to increase in the coming years. The route passes through major industrial and economic hubs, including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Irungattukottai, serving automobile, cement, and manufacturing industries. Additionally, the proposed Parandur Airport project near Kancheepuram is located close to the alignment, further highlighting the strategic importance of this corridor.
Public response and expectations
Residents of the western suburbs have welcomed the move but urged the railways to ensure timely completion of the project. They also called for increased train services on the Chennai-Tiruvallur section and reduced waiting times at crossings. T Sadagopan, a consumer activist, remarked, "Western suburbs are experiencing a real estate boom. Railways must match this growth by enhancing services."
