Rashid Khan Declined Citizenship Offers from India and Australia to Represent Afghanistan
In a revealing new biography, Afghan cricket sensation Rashid Khan has disclosed that he received formal offers of citizenship from both India and Australia, with the opportunity to switch national teams, but he firmly turned them down to continue playing for his home country. The book, titled Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom, is scheduled for release on Monday and features interviews with the author Mohammad Haand Jafar, where Rashid details these approaches.
Direct Offers from Two Cricket Giants
According to the book, as reported by news agency PTI, Rashid Khan stated, "I received such offers (citizenship and playing) from both Australia and India. But I told them, ‘If I don’t play for my country, I won’t play for any other country either." While he did not elaborate on the specifics of the Australian proposal, the 27-year-old leg-spinner provided a detailed account of the Indian approach during the 2023 Indian Premier League season.
The Indian Cricket Board's Proposal
Rashid, who plays for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, recounted that a team official informed him that a "high-ranking official from the Indian Cricket Board" wished to meet him. "I went over and greeted him. We started talking, and he said: ‘The situation in your country (Afghanistan) is very bad. Come stay in India. We will give you Indian documents, live here, play cricket here.’ I was surprised by what he was saying and didn't know how to respond. But I smiled and said, ‘Thank you very much. I am playing for my country, Afghanistan,'" Khan explained in the book.
Past Instances of National Pride
Rashid’s unwavering commitment to representing Afghanistan has been evident in previous incidents as well. The book mentions that during the 2018 IPL, while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Riders, he delivered an exceptional all-round performance, scoring 34 runs off just 10 balls and taking three wickets. This display sparked a wave of social media posts in India, with users urging the government to grant him citizenship and tagging then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
In response, Swaraj tweeted: "I saw all your tweets. But citizenship matters are dealt with by the Ministry of Home Affairs." The issue also prompted a reaction from former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who asserted that Rashid was a matter of national pride and would not be given to another country. Rashid later expressed gratitude for this support and reaffirmed his dedication to Afghanistan.
Journey from Nangarhar to International Stardom
The biography chronicles Rashid Khan’s remarkable journey from his humble beginnings in Nangarhar to becoming a global cricket icon. It covers key milestones, including how he initially missed out on an Afghanistan U-19 trial before rising to become one of the country’s leading players. His achievements were capped with being named the ICC’s Player of the Decade in 2020, highlighting his impact on the sport.
This story underscores the deep loyalty and patriotism that Rashid Khan holds for Afghanistan, even in the face of lucrative opportunities from cricketing powerhouses. His decision serves as an inspiration, emphasizing the value of representing one’s homeland on the international stage.
