RCB Announces Tribute to Stampede Victims with Jersey Number 11 Initiative
In a heartfelt gesture, defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have announced a poignant tribute to the fans who tragically lost their lives last year. The franchise revealed on Tuesday that all players will wear jersey number 11 during pre-match training sessions throughout the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Honoring the Memory of 11 Fans
The decision was made specifically "in memory of the 11 fans" who died in a devastating stampede on June 4, 2024. The tragedy occurred during celebrations following RCB's maiden IPL title victory at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The franchise faced significant criticism for its handling of the event, which drew massive crowds without adequate security measures.
RCB CEO Rajesh Menon explained the emotional significance behind the tribute. "In memory of the 11 fans who we lost on June 4th. The players will be wearing jersey number 11 for the practice on the game day, on the practice time before the match," Menon stated. He clarified that while the special jerseys will be worn during training, players will revert to their regular numbers for actual matches.
Additional Memorial Plans
The tribute extends beyond just jersey numbers. RCB has announced several additional measures to permanently honor the victims:
- Players will wear black armbands on match days as a mark of respect
- The franchise plans to designate 11 permanent seats at Chinnaswamy Stadium in honor of the deceased fans
- These memorial seats will remain "forever" as a lasting tribute
"Apart from that, they (players) will also be wearing black armbands on that day. We are also looking at having 11 permanent seats in Chinnaswamy Stadium forever. This is for the 11 fans who will be with us forever," Menon added, emphasizing the franchise's commitment to keeping the memory of the victims alive.
Upcoming IPL Season Details
RCB will begin their title defense on March 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at their home ground, Chinnaswamy Stadium. This match marks the first of five home games scheduled for the franchise this season. Interestingly, RCB will play their remaining two home matches at Raipur's Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, adding a new dimension to their home game schedule.
The upcoming season carries particular emotional weight as it represents RCB's first campaign since the tragic events of last June. The stampede occurred during post-victory celebrations when chaos erupted among the massive crowds that had gathered to celebrate RCB's historic first IPL championship win.
The franchise's tribute initiative represents a significant step toward healing and remembrance, acknowledging both the joy of their championship victory and the profound loss that accompanied it. As RCB prepares to defend their title, these memorial gestures will serve as constant reminders of the fans whose lives were tragically cut short during what should have been purely celebratory moments.
