MUMBAI: Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag on Thursday underwent a successful shoulder surgery at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. The procedure was performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwalla, who serves as the consultant orthopaedic surgeon for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and has operated on numerous top cricketers and sportspersons.
Parag's statement on recovery
Taking to Instagram, Parag shared a post-surgery picture and wrote: "Well, the shoulder finally won! For everyone who’s been asking, the surgery is done and went well. The past two years have tested me in ways I never expected. There were good days, frustrating days, and days when simply getting through a game was a challenge. But I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Now comes a different challenge- recovery, rehab and patience. I’ll be back doing what I love soon. See you on the other side."
Impact on upcoming season
Parag is expected to be sidelined for a considerable period and will likely miss the majority of the 2026-27 season, with the primary focus being on his recovery and rehabilitation. His rehabilitation will be managed by the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Earlier, Parag was named vice-captain for the India A squad for the 50-over tri-series featuring Afghanistan A and Sri Lanka A. However, he was replaced by Ruturaj Gaikwad after being ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
Performance and controversies
In IPL 2026, Parag scored 309 runs in 14 matches at an average of 23.76 and a strike rate of 157.65, including two half-centuries, as he led the Rajasthan Royals into the playoffs. However, shoulder and hamstring injuries forced him to miss a couple of matches during the tournament.
The 24-year-old Assam captain has played one ODI (15 runs at 15.00) and nine T20Is (106 runs at 17.66) for India, all in 2024. During IPL 2026, Parag was involved in a controversy when he was caught on camera vaping in the dressing room, resulting in a fine and warning from the BCCI.
