Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli in India ODI squad for Afghanistan series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squads for the upcoming one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in June. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been named in the ODI squad, with Rohit's inclusion subject to fitness clearance alongside Hardik Pandya.

Shubman Gill to Lead Both Formats

Shubman Gill has been appointed captain for both the Test and ODI series. KL Rahul will serve as vice-captain for the one-off Test, while Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain for the ODI leg. The ODI squad also includes Prince Yadav, who receives his maiden call-up to the national team.

Squad Composition

The Test squad features a blend of experienced players and emerging talents. Alongside Gill and Rahul, the Test team includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Devdutt Padikkal, and Kuldeep Yadav. New faces such as Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey, and Manav Suthar have also earned their places. The ODI squad retains core players like Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul, with additions like Ishan Kishan and Arshdeep Singh.

Series Schedule

The one-off Test will be held in New Chandigarh from June 6 to 10. The ODI series begins on June 14 in Dharamsala, followed by matches in Lucknow on June 17 and Chennai on June 20. This marks only the second Test meeting between India and Afghanistan, with their first Test in India taking place in Bengaluru in 2018.

Preparations for 2027 World Cup

The ODI series is part of India's preparations for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. The selectors have largely retained the core of the side that last played ODI cricket against New Zealand earlier this year, while introducing fresh faces to build depth.
