Ruturaj Gaikwad Can Do More: CSK Coach Fleming on Captain's IPL 2026 Form
Ruturaj Gaikwad Can Do More: Fleming on CSK Captain

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has acknowledged that captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has room for improvement following a series of underwhelming performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Speaking to the media after CSK's recent match, Fleming expressed confidence in Gaikwad's abilities but stressed the need for the opener to convert his starts into substantial scores.

Gaikwad's Struggles in IPL 2026

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy from MS Dhoni ahead of IPL 2025, has faced a challenging run in the ongoing season. The right-handed batsman has managed only 285 runs in 12 innings at an average of 23.75, with a highest score of 62. His strike rate of 124.45 is also below his career average. These numbers have raised concerns among fans and experts, especially given CSK's inconsistent campaign.

In the team's most recent fixture against the Rajasthan Royals, Gaikwad was dismissed for a duck, continuing a pattern of early exits. Despite these setbacks, Fleming remains optimistic. "Ruturaj is a quality player and a strong leader. He knows his game better than anyone. We have full faith in him, but we also believe he can do more," Fleming said.

Fleming's Full Support

The CSK coach emphasized that the team management is not considering any change in captaincy. "It's not about one or two failures. Ruturaj has led the side well tactically, and his commitment is unquestionable. We are working with him to address technical aspects, and I am sure he will bounce back," Fleming added.

Fleming also pointed out that Gaikwad's contributions extend beyond batting. "His captaincy has been impressive. He has managed the bowlers well and made some brave decisions. The batting form will come; it's just a matter of time."

Team's Current Standings

CSK currently sits fifth on the points table with six wins from 12 matches, needing victories in their remaining games to secure a playoff berth. The team's batting lineup has relied heavily on Devon Conway and Shivam Dube, with Gaikwad's lack of runs putting additional pressure on the middle order.

Fleming acknowledged the need for collective improvement. "We need contributions from everyone. It's not just about Ruturaj. The entire batting unit has to step up in the crucial phase of the tournament."

Looking Ahead

CSK's next match is against the Lucknow Super Giants, and Gaikwad will be eager to return to form. Fleming hinted at potential changes in the batting order to accommodate Gaikwad's preference for facing more balls early on. "We are exploring options to give him more time in the middle. He is a class act, and once he gets going, he can take the game away from the opposition."

Fleming concluded by urging patience from fans. "In a long tournament like the IPL, every player goes through a lean patch. Ruturaj has the character to overcome this. We back him completely."
