Speaking to the media after CSK's recent match, Fleming expressed confidence in Gaikwad's abilities but stressed the need for the opener to convert his starts into substantial scores.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy from MS Dhoni ahead of IPL 2025, has faced a challenging run in the ongoing season. The right-handed batsman has managed only 285 runs in 12 innings at an average of 23.75, with a highest score of 62. His strike rate of 124.45 is also below his career average. These numbers have raised concerns among fans and experts, especially given CSK's inconsistent campaign.
In the team's most recent fixture against the Rajasthan Royals, Gaikwad was dismissed for a duck, continuing a pattern of early exits. Despite these setbacks, Fleming remains optimistic. "Ruturaj is a quality player and a strong leader. He knows his game better than anyone. We have full faith in him, but we also believe he can do more," Fleming said.

The CSK coach emphasized that the team management is not considering any change in captaincy. "It's not about one or two failures. Ruturaj has led the side well tactically, and his commitment is unquestionable. We are working with him to address technical aspects, and I am sure he will bounce back," Fleming added.
Fleming also pointed out that Gaikwad's contributions extend beyond batting. "His captaincy has been impressive. He has managed the bowlers well and made some brave decisions. The batting form will come; it's just a matter of time."
