NEW DELHI: Pakistan batter Salman Agha has been officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after losing his temper during the second Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet. The incident occurred when Salman was dismissed in Pakistan's second innings and, while walking back to the pavilion, struck an advertising board with his bat.
ICC Code of Conduct Violation
The ICC found Salman guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, which pertains to damaging or abusing cricket equipment and ground fixtures during an international match. Along with the reprimand, one demerit point was added to his disciplinary record. This was his second offence within the last 24 months, bringing his total tally to two demerit points.
Salman accepted the punishment proposed by ICC match referee Jeff Crowe, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The charge was reported by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Allahuddien Palekar, along with third umpire Kumar Dharmasena and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul.
Level 1 Offence and Consequences
Level 1 ICC offences can result in an official warning, fines, or demerit points, depending on the severity of the incident. The disciplinary issue came during a disappointing match for Pakistan, who lost the second Test by 78 runs. Bangladesh completed a historic 2-0 series sweep after spinner Taijul Islam starred with a six-wicket haul while defending a target of 437.
Despite the defeat, Salman was one of Pakistan's better performers in the second innings. He scored 71 runs and shared a crucial partnership with Mohammad Rizwan while attempting to save the match.
Impact on World Test Championship Standings
The loss has pushed Pakistan down to eighth place in the World Test Championship standings, with the team managing just one win from four matches in the current cycle.
