Sanju Samson Attributes Comeback to Digital Detox and Inner Reflection
Indian cricketer Sanju Samson has opened up about how a period of self-imposed isolation from his phone and social media platforms played a pivotal role in his return to form. This introspection culminated in a stunning unbeaten 97 runs off just 50 balls, a performance that propelled India into the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026. The match, held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, saw India chase down a target of 196 to defeat West Indies by five wickets in their Super 8 clash on Sunday.
Overcoming a Slump Through Technical Adjustments and Mental Resilience
Prior to the tournament, Samson faced a challenging phase, managing only 46 runs across five innings during the T20I series against New Zealand at home. This poor run led to his exclusion from the playing XI for matches against the USA, Pakistan, Netherlands, and South Africa in the World Cup. He made a brief return against Zimbabwe, scoring 24 off 15 balls, but it was his knock against West Indies that truly marked his resurgence.
In an interview on JioHotstar, Samson detailed his approach to navigating this difficult period. "Our human nature is that we often start from a negative thought like, 'Can I do it? I don't think I can.' When I have that thought, I try to alter it with a very positive one," he explained. "When I had a series like New Zealand where I wanted to perform and be part of the World Cup team, things did not work out well, but luckily I got a 10-day gap. I did not play any games and was not in the side. I kept thinking, 'Sanju, what else? Why didn't it work? What else should I do?' So I did some soul-searching. I worked on my base, how I set myself up, and came back to it."
Ignoring External Noise and Focusing on Self-Belief
Samson emphasized the importance of shutting out external opinions during his time away from the game. "A lot of people had suggestions and I saw a lot of valid points, but at the same time I felt, 'Sanju, you have scored three international hundreds with the same setup.' Shot selection was something I kept working on. I did not want to change too much because I knew I had performed with the same setup, so I kept believing in myself, switched off my phone, switched off social media and listened to my own self. I am very happy it happened in a very special game," he added.
Reflecting on his match-winning innings, Samson described it as the realization of a long-held dream. "More than a hundred cricketers in India dream about a day like this. I dared to dream. A young guy from Trivandrum, Kerala, dreaming about playing for the country and winning a game in such a crucial match. I dared to dream and it happened," he said.
Match Highlights: India's Chase and West Indies' Batting Effort
In the match, India won the toss and opted to field first. West Indies posted a competitive total of 195/4 in their 20 overs, thanks to contributions from Roston Chase (40 off 25 balls), Shai Hope (32 off 33 balls), Shimron Hetmyer (27 off 12 balls), Jason Holder (37 not out off 22 balls), and Rovman Powell (34 not out off 19 balls). For India, Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling attack with figures of 2/36 in four overs, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Hardik Pandya each claimed a wicket.
India's chase got off to a shaky start, losing two early wickets to be 41/2 in the powerplay. However, a 58-run partnership between Samson and Suryakumar Yadav (18) stabilized the innings. Samson then forged crucial partnerships with Tilak Varma (27 off 15 balls), Hardik Pandya (17), and Shivam Dube (8 not out) to secure the victory with five wickets in hand.
This win not only highlights Samson's personal triumph but also underscores India's strong position as they advance to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026, showcasing the team's depth and resilience in high-pressure situations.
