Sayali Satghare Sets Sights on T20 Team After Memorable Test Debut

Mumbai fast bowler Sayali Satghare made a remarkable entry into international cricket with her debut in the Perth pink-ball Women's Test against Australia. Now, the 25-year-old seamer is firmly focused on securing a place in the India women's T20 team, which faces a packed schedule of challenging assignments over the next four months.

Upcoming Challenges and World Cup Build-Up

India is scheduled to tour South Africa for a five-match T20 International series starting April 17. This series serves as crucial preparation for the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup in England, commencing June 12. When asked about her chances for selection in the South Africa series, Satghare expressed hope while acknowledging the selectors' role. "Yeah, I would love to be there, but I have done whatever I could have in the past few months, so it's up to the selectors," she stated in an interview.

Test Debut Highlights and Regrets

In her Test debut at the WACA ground, Satghare delivered an impressive performance, taking four wickets for 50 runs with her skillful swing bowling. Despite this personal success, India suffered a heavy 10-wicket defeat to Australia. Reflecting on the experience, Satghare said, "It was a great experience. I would've been happier if we would have won the match. But playing in Australia, at the WACA ground in Perth is a dream for any fast bowler. So yeah, I'm really grateful that I got that opportunity."

She particularly cherished dismissing Australian opener Georgia Voll with a perfect in-swinger and former captain Alyssa Healy in her farewell Test. "Alyssa is obviously a legend of the game, so to get her wicket in her final innings was special and memorable," she beamed.

Meeting a Legend and Team Support

At the launch of the new T20 Mumbai League seasons, Satghare shared the stage with former India captain Rohit Sharma, describing it as an inspiring moment. "This is the first time I have met him. He's been an inspiration for a long time. He's a legend of the game, the greatest opener ever. He's very humble, and it made me feel comfortable on the stage," she gushed.

She also praised skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for her support during the challenging debut against Australia. "She was very supportive and she made all four of us debutants feel comfortable. Whenever I had a doubt I could go to her and she would just suggest what can be done," Satghare noted.

Bowling Idols and Format Aspirations

Satghare looks up to modern pace greats Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc for their adaptability and execution across formats. "If I can do even half of what they can do, that would be great for me," she remarked. While eager to represent India in all three formats, she values the Test cap highly, given its rarity in women's cricket.

Humble Beginnings and Future Competition

Recalling her start in cricket, Satghare shared how she began playing street cricket with her brothers in Borivali before being spotted by coach Praful Naik at age seven or eight. "He wondered how a girl is able to unleash such a powerful throw. He then asked me if I wanted to play cricket," she recounted, adding that her father's love for the sport encouraged her pursuit.

With stiff competition for seam bowling spots in the women's team, Satghare emphasized camaraderie over rivalry. "All of us are just trying to do well for the team, so obviously there is competition, but whenever someone plays, we always hope that she does well, and at the end of the day, India wins the match," she concluded positively.
