Mohammed Shami Backs LSG Owner Sanjiv Goenka Amid Fan Backlash Over Viral IPL Moments
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has once again found itself at the center of off-field drama, this time involving Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka. Viral visuals from IPL 2024 and 2025 showing Goenka in intense conversations with then-captain KL Rahul and current skipper Rishabh Pant following defeats have sparked widespread criticism from fans. Many have interpreted these boundary-rope interactions as evidence of an overly strict and demanding ownership style.
Shami's Strong Defense of the LSG Owner
However, LSG's star pacer Mohammed Shami has come forward with a robust defense of the franchise owner. In a recent podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, Shami emphasized that Goenka's high expectations are both natural and justified given his substantial investment in the team.
"Anyone who invests so much money into building a team will naturally have high expectations. That's completely normal, and it's justified," Shami stated, highlighting the owner's passion for cricket and his logical approach to team discussions.
The veteran bowler, who is set to make his debut for LSG against Delhi Capitals at Lucknow's Ekana Cricket Stadium, revealed that his personal interactions with Goenka have been consistently positive. "I've met him a few times — around two or three times so far. He has always spoken very well, very logically, and the conversations have been around the team," Shami explained.
The Context of LSG's Recent Struggles
The controversy emerges against the backdrop of LSG's fluctuating fortunes in the IPL. The franchise made impressive playoff appearances in their first two seasons (2022 and 2023) but has since experienced disappointing campaigns in 2024 and 2025, failing to qualify for the knockout stages both years.
This performance dip has likely intensified scrutiny on team management and ownership decisions, with fans and analysts alike questioning the franchise's direction. The viral moments with captains have become symbolic of broader concerns about pressure and expectations within the LSG camp.
Shami's Perspective on Investment and Expectations
Drawing a relatable analogy, Shami further elaborated on why Goenka's attitude is understandable. "If you take a normal person — even if they invest Rs 5000 in something, their heart skips a beat thinking their money might be lost. So if Goenka ji is that possessive about his team, there's nothing wrong with it," he remarked.
The pacer, who was acquired by LSG for Rs 10 crore, addressed the proliferation of memes and social media commentary surrounding the owner-player interactions. "There have been a lot of memes and a lot of things going around that aren't right," Shami noted, suggesting that much of the online reaction has been exaggerated or misplaced.
A Veteran's Balanced View on Team Dynamics
With 119 IPL matches and 133 wickets to his name, Shami brings considerable experience to the discussion. Having represented multiple franchises including Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, he understands the varied ownership styles across the league.
Shami emphasized the importance of open communication between owners and players. "If someone wants to talk to you, you should talk. If they want to discuss something, you should engage in that discussion properly," he advised, describing himself as "very open" to such conversations.
However, the Indian pacer also acknowledged that frustration can occur naturally in high-pressure environments. "There are times when even a captain gets frustrated, and there are times when players feel frustrated too. So if something happens and expectations are involved, then all the drama and memes that follow — sometimes they just become unnecessary," he concluded, calling for more measured responses to such situations.
As LSG prepares for their upcoming match, Shami's comments provide an insider's perspective on the often-contentious relationship between IPL franchise owners and their teams, reminding fans that substantial financial investments naturally come with heightened expectations for performance and success.
