Shreyas Iyer Named India T20I Captain, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Breaks Record

A new chapter begins for Indian cricket as Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain of the T20I team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. The announcement came on Saturday, marking a significant shift in leadership. Alongside this change, the squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England includes 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has broken Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record as the youngest player ever to represent India.

Shreyas Iyer Takes Charge

Shreyas Iyer returns to the national T20 side for the first time since December 3, 2023, when he played against Australia in Bengaluru. His impressive leadership in the Indian Premier League (IPL) played a key role in his selection. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024 and Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. His consistent batting performances over the last two seasons further strengthened his case. The selectors chose him to replace Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Historic Achievement

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, at 15 years and 71 days old, becomes the youngest cricketer ever to be selected for the Indian team. He surpasses the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who held the record for decades. Sooryavanshi earned his spot after winning the Orange Cap in the 2026 season, scoring 776 runs with a century and five half-centuries at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30. His inclusion was widely anticipated after such a stellar performance.
