Ahmedabad Hotels Experience Unprecedented Demand as T20 Final Approaches
While India's economical bowling secured a seven-wicket victory over England in the ICC Men's T20 semi-final, the impact on Ahmedabad's hospitality sector is far from budget-friendly. The city, set to host the final against New Zealand, has witnessed a dramatic spike in hotel occupancy and tariffs within just 12 hours of India's qualification.
Skyrocketing Tariffs and Limited Availability
Hotel rates in Ahmedabad have soared to extraordinary levels. A popular brand-managed hotel in Motera listed a night's stay at Rs 1.16 lakh on its website, though direct inquiries quoted around Rs 80,000 plus 18% GST. Properties in other areas are following suit:
- A hotel near Keshavbaug is charging Rs 80,000 for one night.
- Hotels on Sindhu Bhavan Road range from Rs 56,000 to Rs 76,000, depending on room category and availability.
Even budget accommodations are no longer affordable. The lowest rate cited was approximately Rs 15,000 for a non-star hotel in the Satellite area, significantly above typical weekend prices. In upscale locales like Judges Bungalow, rooms usually priced at Rs 6,000 with breakfast are now offered at Rs 20,000 without breakfast for the match weekend.
Stricter Payment and Cancellation Policies
Prospective guests are facing tougher terms, with many hotels requiring advance payments and refusing refunds. This marks a shift from standard online booking practices, where cancellations are often allowed until check-in. For the final weekend, several properties have either eliminated cancellation options or imposed restrictive conditions, adding to traveler frustrations.
Industry Insights and Economic Impact
Narendra Somani, president of the Gujarat Hotels and Restaurants Association, explained that most of Ahmedabad's hotel inventory is already committed. "Room rates are currently Rs 15,000 to Rs 80,000 and can exceed Rs 1 lakh as more demand pours in from fans securing tickets. March is typically slow, but the World Cup final has helped hotels achieve their monthly averages," Somani stated.
A staff member at a five-star hotel confirmed the property is sold out, attributing the shortage to bulk bookings. With large blocks of rooms reserved in advance, remaining inventory has tightened, driving up prices for last-minute travelers.
Broader Business Opportunities Beyond Hotels
Sanjeev Chhajer, chairman of the travel and tourism taskforce at the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted the spillover benefits. "The city is poised for a huge business opportunity in hotels, restaurants, tourism, and transportation. Restaurants and segments like handloom and handicrafts will also see significant gains," Chhajer noted, emphasizing the influx of visitors from across India and overseas.
This surge underscores how major sporting events can transform local economies, with Ahmedabad's hospitality industry reaping substantial rewards from the T20 final frenzy.
