Shivam Dube's Unconventional Return: From World Cup Glory to a Train Ride in 3rd AC

In the aftermath of India's triumphant victory at the 2026 T20 World Cup, while most players were expected to jet home on chartered flights, all-rounder Shivam Dube embarked on a remarkably different journey. Instead of soaring through the skies, Dube found himself traveling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai by train, booking a humble 3rd AC ticket alongside his wife and a friend, just like any ordinary passenger.

Flight Unavailability Leads to an Unexpected Choice

Dube revealed that his initial plan was to secure flight tickets for himself and his family, but with all flights fully booked, he had to explore alternative options. Driving back by road was a possibility, but he calculated that taking an early morning train would be the quicker route. "There were no flights available, so I decided to take an early morning train from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. We could have gone by road, but the train was quicker," he explained in an interview with The Indian Express.

Concerns Over Recognition and a Discreet Disguise

Fresh from winning the World Cup with Team India, Dube was acutely aware of the risk of being recognized by enthusiastic fans at the station or during the train ride. His family and friends expressed significant worry about this scenario. "Everyone we spoke to—family and friends—was worried. They kept asking, 'What if someone recognises you at the station or on the train?'" he recounted.

To maintain a low profile and avoid drawing attention, Dube took several precautionary measures:

  • He wore a cap, a mask, and a long-sleeved T-shirt as a disguise.
  • He selected a 5:10 am train, hoping the station would be less crowded at that early hour.
  • He waited inside his car until the final few minutes before boarding to minimize exposure.

During the journey, he mostly stayed on the top berth to remain unnoticed. At one point, the ticket checker nearly uncovered his identity when checking tickets, asking, "Shivam Dube? Woh kaun hai, cricketer?" Dube's wife swiftly intervened, responding, "No, no. Woh kahan se aayega (where will he come from)?" which successfully diverted the checker's attention.

A Smooth Journey and a Safe Arrival

Despite the constant threat of recognition, the train journey proceeded without major incidents. Dube eventually reached Mumbai safely, where police assistance was arranged to manage his exit from the station, ensuring a smooth transition from his incognito travel back to public life.

This unusual trip highlights a refreshingly human side to sports stardom, demonstrating that even a celebrated World Cup winner can sometimes find himself navigating the same travel challenges as any regular passenger. It serves as a poignant reminder of the blend of fame and everyday realities that athletes experience off the field.
