Techie Loses Rs 1.46 Lakh in Elaborate IPL Ticket Scam on Instagram

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) season intensifies, the frenzy for match tickets reaches fever pitch among cricket enthusiasts. With official tickets selling out rapidly, desperate fans often turn to unofficial channels, creating a fertile ground for fraudsters. This desperation proved costly for a 25-year-old software professional from Bengaluru, who was duped of a staggering Rs 1.46 lakh in an elaborate ticket scam orchestrated through Instagram.

The Instagram Trap: Posing as a Stadium Supervisor

The victim, a resident of B Narayanapura in Bengaluru, filed a formal complaint with the Mahadevapura Police after falling prey to the scam. According to a detailed report in Deccan Herald, the fraudster identified himself as Sumit Biswal, claiming to be a senior supervisor at the ticket counter of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Biswal allegedly promised to arrange legitimate IPL tickets along with complimentary food coupons for the highly anticipated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) versus Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clash.

"He asked me to come near the stadium gate number 10, saying someone would deliver the tickets within minutes, and even sent an email confirmation to gain my trust," the complainant recounted to the newspaper. The initial agreement was for two tickets priced at Rs 3,700 each, but the situation quickly escalated.

Escalating Demands Under False Pretenses

What began as a simple ticket purchase transformed into a financial nightmare. The scammer, operating under the alias Sumit Biswal, continuously invented new reasons to demand additional payments. These pretexts included:

  • Refundable security deposits
  • Extra identification cards for stadium entry
  • Additional charges for the promised food coupons

Trusting the fraudster's assurances, the techie made multiple bank transfers, eventually exhausting his personal account limits. In a desperate bid to secure the tickets, he even utilized his mother's bank account, culminating in total losses of approximately Rs 1.46 lakh. The promised tickets never materialized, leaving the fan both financially and emotionally devastated.

RCB's Commanding Victory Overshadows Fan's Misfortune

Ironically, the match that sparked this costly scam witnessed a spectacular performance by RCB. In their IPL 2026 encounter against CSK at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured a dominant 43-run victory, registering their second win of the season.

The batting lineup delivered an explosive display, with Tim David remaining unbeaten on 70 runs from just 25 balls and Rajat Patidar scoring 48 not out from 19 deliveries. Devdutt Padikkal set the foundation with a fluent 50 off 29 balls, propelling RCB to a record-breaking total of 250/3—the highest in IPL 2026 thus far.

In response, Chennai Super Kings struggled under mounting scoreboard pressure. While Sarfaraz Khan contributed a brisk 50 from 24 balls and Prashant Veer added 43, the top order largely faltered. CSK were eventually bowled out for 207 in 19.4 overs, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar leading the attack with a disciplined spell of 3-41, surpassing 200 IPL wickets in the process.

This comprehensive triumph marked RCB's fourth consecutive victory over CSK, a historic first in IPL history. However, for one ardent fan, the celebration was marred by a significant financial loss, highlighting the darker side of the IPL ticket craze.

Police Investigation Underway

The Mahadevapura Police have registered a case based on the techie's complaint and are actively investigating the Instagram account used by the fraudster. Authorities have urged cricket fans to exercise extreme caution when purchasing tickets from unofficial sources, especially through social media platforms where verification is challenging.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that the excitement surrounding premier sporting events can sometimes be exploited by unscrupulous individuals, turning fan enthusiasm into financial ruin.
