Tim David fined 30% match fees for obscene gesture in IPL

Mumbai Indians batsman Tim David has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for making an obscene and offensive gesture during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on May 10.

Incident and Fine

The incident took place in the 18th over of Mumbai Indians' innings when David was dismissed by RCB pacer Yash Dayal. After being dismissed, David was seen making an offensive hand gesture towards the RCB dugout. The on-field umpires, Nitin Menon and Rohan Pandit, reported the matter to the match referee, who found David guilty of breaching the IPL's Code of Conduct.

David was charged with a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to using obscene or offensive gestures. He accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, thus avoiding a formal hearing.

This is not the first time David has been involved in such an incident. In the 2025 IPL season, he was fined 10 per cent of his match fees for a similar gesture during a match against the Chennai Super Kings.

Match Summary

In the match, RCB batted first and posted a challenging total of 199/6 in their 20 overs, thanks to a brilliant knock of 92 off 47 balls by Virat Kohli. In response, Mumbai Indians could only manage 178/8, falling short by 21 runs. David scored 37 off 22 balls before his dismissal.

The fine serves as a reminder to players to maintain decorum on the field, with the IPL taking a strict stance against any form of misconduct.
