Tunisia have dismissed head coach Sabri Lamouchi following their crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in the opening match of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. The Tunisian Football Federation (TFT) announced the appointment of fellow Frenchman Herve Renard as his replacement on an interim basis until the end of the tournament.
Lamouchi dismissed after heavy loss
The TFT confirmed that Lamouchi's departure was by mutual agreement. In a post on Instagram, the federation thanked Lamouchi for his service and wished him well in his future endeavors. The decision came swiftly after Tunisia's defensive frailties were exposed in the Group stage opener.
Herve Renard takes charge
Herve Renard, a highly experienced manager known for his success with African teams, will lead the North African side for the remainder of the World Cup. The TFT stated that Renard will assume his duties immediately under the same financial terms as Lamouchi. A longer-term contract will be discussed after the tournament, contingent on the team's performance and sporting objectives.
In an official statement, the TFT said: "The Tunisian Football Federation announces the appointment of Herve Renard as head coach of the national team through the end of the 2026 World Cup. He will assume his duties this evening under the same financial terms. The agreement also stipulates that negotiations regarding long-term cooperation--based on specific sporting objectives--will commence following the team's World Cup campaign."
Sweden humiliation
In Sunday's match, Sweden dominated Tunisia, with a brace from Yasin Ayari and goals from Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, and Mattias Svanberg. Tunisia's only consolation came from Omar Rekik in the 43rd minute. The 5-1 scoreline ranks among Tunisia's worst international results, highlighting defensive vulnerabilities that Renard will need to address quickly.
Renard, who previously led Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations titles, brings a wealth of experience. He will now prepare the team for their remaining World Cup group matches, aiming to salvage their campaign.
