Two individuals lost their lives after a high-speed BMW collided with a road divider on the Mumbai-Vadodara highway in Badlapur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday, June 22, 2026. The incident occurred near the Badlapur toll plaza around 3:30 AM, according to local police officials.
Details of the Accident
The vehicle, a white BMW sedan, was traveling from Mumbai towards Vadodara when it lost control and slammed into the central median. The impact was so severe that the car was completely mangled, trapping the occupants inside. Emergency services arrived at the scene within minutes and extricated the victims, who were later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The deceased have been identified as Rajesh Sharma, 34, and Priya Singh, 28, both residents of Mumbai.
Police Investigation Underway
Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that overspeeding may have been a contributing factor. The highway was briefly closed to traffic to allow for the removal of the wreckage, causing delays for commuters. Authorities are also checking CCTV footage to determine whether any other vehicles were involved.
"We are investigating all angles, including possible mechanical failure or driver negligence. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and we are awaiting the autopsy report," said Inspector Vikram Patil of the Badlapur police station.
Impact and Safety Concerns
The accident has once again raised concerns about road safety on the Mumbai-Vadodara highway, which has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent years. According to data from the Maharashtra Transport Department, over 200 people died in accidents on this stretch in 2025. Local residents have demanded better lighting, speed breakers, and stricter enforcement of speed limits.
"This stretch is notorious for accidents. We have been requesting the authorities to install more speed cameras and barriers, but nothing has been done. This tragedy could have been avoided," said Anil Deshmukh, a local activist.
Response from Officials
Maharashtra Transport Minister Deepak Kesarkar expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured that steps would be taken to improve highway safety. "We will review the safety measures on this highway and take necessary actions to prevent such incidents in the future," he said in a statement.
The highway is a vital arterial route connecting Mumbai to Gujarat and carries heavy traffic, including many commercial vehicles. The accident has led to renewed calls for a comprehensive safety audit of the entire corridor.
