Kendrapada: In a tragic incident on Wednesday afternoon, two construction workers lost their lives and two others sustained injuries when the pickup-van they were traveling in skidded off the road and overturned at Mugakani village under Rajnagar police station in Kendrapada district.

Victims Identified

The deceased have been identified as Sumant Mohanty (40), a resident of Gokhani village, and Kumar Barik (42), from Chinchani village. The accident occurred as the victims, along with other workers, were returning to their villages after completing their day's work.

Details of the Accident

According to Naresh Kumar Sahoo, Inspector-in-Charge of Rajnagar police station, the vehicle skidded off the road, overturned, and plunged into a roadside agricultural field. The driver lost control, leading to the fatal crash.

Local residents quickly rushed to the scene and provided immediate assistance. All four individuals were promptly admitted to the community health centre at Rajnagar, where doctors declared two of them dead upon arrival. The injured persons, identified as Gouranga Mandal and Arjun Barik, are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital in Rajnagar, the police officer added.

Police have seized the bodies and sent them to the district headquarters hospital at Kendrapada for post-mortem examination. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the risks faced by daily wage workers traveling on rural roads. Authorities have urged caution and are considering measures to improve road safety in the area.
