Umpire Fatally Stabbed Following Cricket Match Dispute in Visakhapatnam
In a shocking and tragic incident, a local cricket umpire was stabbed to death after a dispute over a run-out decision during a match in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The violent episode has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious concerns about sportsmanship and safety in amateur cricket.
Details of the Fatal Altercation
The victim, identified as Dola Ajith Babu, was officiating a local cricket match along with his friend and fellow umpire Budumuri Chiranjeevi. According to police reports, the incident occurred on Sunday evening when an argument erupted between players from two teams regarding a run-out call.
Circle Inspector Malleswara Rao provided crucial details: "Ajith Babu and Chiranjeevi intervened and managed to settle the issue on the field initially. However, the situation escalated when one of the spectators, Kanta Kishore, became enraged and began verbally abusing both the umpires and players."
After the match concluded, the two umpires and some friends gathered at a nearby location. It was at this spot that another confrontation broke out. Inspector Rao continued: "Kishore suddenly produced a knife and launched an attack on the two umpires without warning."
Aftermath and Hospitalization
The attack proved fatal for Ajith Babu, who was stabbed by Kishore and collapsed immediately at the scene. He was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment, but medical professionals declared him dead upon arrival. Chiranjeevi also sustained injuries during the violent assault but survived the attack.
The victim's brother provided additional context to NDTV: "In the match, there was an argument over one run. The person who attempted the murder was not a cricket player. He is a resident of Vinayak Nagar who inserted himself into the argument and used abusive language, which intensified tensions between both teams."
Family Response and Police Complaint
Ajith Babu's father, Dola Appala Raju, has formally lodged a murder complaint against Kanta Kishore with local authorities. The victim's brother alleged that the accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack and had planned the violent act in advance.
"Village elders had actually intervened earlier and settled the run-out dispute at the cricket ground itself," the brother explained. "But later in the evening, while intoxicated, Kishore planned this attack. He carried a knife in his pocket and went to the Padigadli junction where he called Chiranjeevi."
The brother described the final moments: "He started shouting and arguing. Suddenly, he took the knife from his pocket and stabbed Dola Ajith in the chest. We tried to apprehend Kishore, but he managed to escape. We immediately took Ajith Babu to VIMS Hospital, but when no doctors were available, we transferred him to Apollo Hospital. Around 8:15 PM, doctors officially declared him dead."
Broader Implications and Community Impact
This tragic incident highlights several concerning issues:
- The escalation of sports disputes into violent confrontations

- Community tensions that can arise from seemingly minor disagreements
The local cricket community in Visakhapatnam is now grappling with this senseless loss, while authorities continue their investigation into the murder. The case serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly sports-related disagreements can turn deadly when combined with anger and intoxication.
