Lucknow: Given the prediction for less rainfall in Uttar Pradesh in June this year, tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuaries in the state will remain open for visitors until June 30. Typically, June 15 marks the closure of protected areas for visitors in Uttar Pradesh every year.
Extended Ecotourism Season
The ecotourism season this year was extended for visitors in Uttar Pradesh as the sites opened on November 1, 2025, under a state government initiative to prolong the ecotourism season. In 2024, the sites opened on November 6. The usual dates for opening and closing these sites are November 15 and June 15, respectively.
Monsoon-Dependent Closure
The closure of ecotourism sites depends on the monsoon forecast. In 2023-24, tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuaries remained open until June 25. The extension of the ecotourism season is expected to generate additional revenue for the state and boost the income of local communities, according to an official release.
Tourist Numbers on the Rise
Uttar Pradesh has four tiger reserves: Dudhwa, Pilibhit, Amangarh, and Ranipur. Tourist numbers at these reserves are increasing each season. In 2023-24, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve attracted 56,770 domestic and 192 foreign tourists. In 2024-25, these numbers rose to 63,362 domestic and 788 foreign tourists.
Similarly, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve recorded 38,183 domestic and 164 foreign tourists in 2023-24, which increased to 56,289 domestic and 452 foreign visitors in 2024-25.
